Hello from NH
« on: July 08, 2015, 11:38:06 AM »
Hi All,

After too many years in front of a computer designing websites I decided to pick up my pens and start working by hand again. I studied calligraphy under Professor Howard Glasser at UMass Dartmouth and fell in love with blackletter and uncial. Starting back up is always difficult as your brain knows what to do but your hands are a little rusty - still feels great to get away from the keyboard for a few hours a day and practice.

Currently live in southern NH doing web design for a local tech company. Decided to set up a blog, twitter and instagram account to encourage myself to keep at this - you can find me @Calligraphynut or www.calligraphynut.com.

Thanks!
Stu

After too many years in front of a computer...

Same here. We should form a support group. I am sure there are others.

Welcome!

Hi Stu, welcome to the Flourish Forum! I'm so excited to see your work, as I love uncial, especially the pointed own version. There's so much to learn around here, you'll definitely have a lot of fun. Happy inking!

hey Stu!!! Welcome to the forum!! Saw your blog, hope you enjoyed Montreal!!

Montreal was amazing - between the two pen shops, DeSerres and Au Papier Japonais I came home both very happy and lighter in the wallet!

Hooray, another broad edge pen peep!  Welcome to Flourish Forum. I had a look at your blog, I see you enjoy using fountain pens.  Do you use them for calligraphy?  If so, do you have a favorite?

I have 2 that I would say qualify - A Lamy Al-Star with a 1.9mm stub nib and a Jinhao X450 that I took the stock nib out of and replaced with a Zebra Comic G nib - which allows you to flex the tines quite a bit and get some interesting line variation - I did a quick walkthrough here: http://www.calligraphynut.com/jinhao-x450-flex-hack/

Thats an awesome hack on the Jinhao :)
I did something similar too with Indian pens and managed to get it to take a LP EF and G nibs.
