Hiya from Oregon!
« on: August 25, 2017, 03:27:57 PM »
Hello! I'm new, and so stoked to have found this forum. :D

My name is Ealasaid,* I live in Portland, OR with my partner and our three cats. I work as a technical writer to pay the bills, but am a bookbinder and movie reviewer on the side. My interest in Bullet Journal stuff led me to the Instagram BuJo community, which got me into fountain pens, which got me interested in lettering. I've started working through the Spencerian Penmanship theory and copy books set, and am finding the drills really meditative and relaxing.

I have a handful of chronic health conditions, and my hands aren't as steady as they used to be. I'm hoping that the discipline of doing drills and writing with a light and easy hand will help me get some of my manual precision back.

Looking forward to getting to know folks!

Cheers,
Ealasaid

*Yep, it's my actual first name. My parents are ... unusual. :) It's Scots Gaelic and is roughly cognate to Elizabeth. In my family, we pronounce it "EL-ah-sade," like "lemonade." I know it's not the standard Scots Gaelic pronunciation, but we've been using it for almost 40 years now, so I'm sticking with ours.

Hi Ealasaid, glad you are here.  I agree, I keep finding new depth in Spencerian drills.  They do seem to help to develop a precision in our mental concepts of letter forms.  They also help to foster a facility of muscular movements, with mental attention, that produces the desired result on paper (in the cases where it all goes right  :)).

Welcome,
John

Hi @ealasaid ,
Such an awesome name! I love Scottish Gaelic names as well (have three kids with them - Delainey Brenna, Kaiden Rory, and Erilyn Allie!). Your name is so unique and so beautiful!

We have much in common. I always thought I missed my calling to be a movie reviewer. For years I never missed a movie - tried to see every new movie that came out in the theatres. Now I just write screenplays that sit in a box.  ;D

I am also in love with bullet journaling - other people's of course. I have collected all this cool stuff to make one and saved lots of pins and then... never quite get the time to do it so I admire anyone that does. I feel like lettering, calligraphy, and Bullet Journals go hand in hand.

I have chronic illnesses as well. Just remember to take frequent breaks and not to over do it.

I'm happy you found us. I hope you will share some of your BuJo stuff sometime. Welcome to Flourish!  ;D
Warm Regards,
Erica
