Day 1 - 2022
« on: September 25, 2022, 12:19:18 PM »
In order to make it easier to navigate, this board can be added to each year with a new topic for each day. If you are the first poster for that day, please start a new topic with the Subject, “Day X - YEAR.” Looking forward to seeing everyone’s art!

So, if I understand this correctly, that will break Inktober 2022 into 30 separate threads in the Inktober board of which this is the first, where day one posts will reside, right?

And here are ink on paper.  My personal Inktober challenge, besides practicing Spencerian script for everyday handwriting, is to learn the "ornamental style" majuscules and to try out nibs, paper, and some brush ink pens I'd purchased for postcards.   Below:

+ Claire Fontaine paper
+ Strathmore Writing® Paper

Running into attachment size limitations.  Here are the others:

+ Various thickness Misulove pens - challenging
+ Pentel FUDE brush pen - felt like writing with a wet towel
+ Gargoyle in Czechia, father's homeland

Excellent Sandserian. Best I've seen on the forum.
Have you tried the Gillott Willow #303?  Very flexible.

2mm Brause 180 nib
Bastarda script from Et Boemie Rex, 1359

(edit to add:  for those who read this post earlier today, I've rewritten it using a small g versus a capital g, as the capital g in this script looks, to most, like a capital b.)

Wonderful work, @Zivio @AnasaziWrites @Lucie Y

Lucie -- I think with many of us in the US, you're going to be our frontrunner posting from Paris!
* That gargoyle G is adorable!

Zivio - you know, you've been fretting about not being "good enough", but really you've got a lovely and highly accomplished Spencerian!

Aaaand, I'm evidently quite out of practice for copperplate!  But that's why I'm doing this.  We'll see if it can't get better over the course of the month.

No doubt your practice will yield results.

Love your drawings. So good.

Having been on vacation for two weeks, I'm behind on all sorts of things and haven't yet decided on a focus for this Inktober. Last year, my drawings took up so much time, I spent little time on the lettering. This year, perhaps I'll use images I have or can find, and experiment with different scripts that seem appropriate. Or maybe concentrate on broad pen. We'll see.
Today's image is from an ad campaign by Listerine from the late '60's/early 70's, which, I suspect, most here are too young to remember. The gargoyle is on (still, I hope, after the fire) the cathedral Notre Dame de Paris. I was most lucky to have visited it a few years prior to the fire.
@Erica McPhee
Might we add the word of the day to the title of these threads, as in "Day 1 -  gargoyle - 2022"? It would make it easier to find specific threads in the future.

You all did nice work on the prompt. Very humorous.

I did end up accomplishing small goals today. I am working on some letters for an exchange, so I made a little progress on that.

Also, I have always wanted to grind my own ink. I have the ink stone and stick, have had them for years, but for some reason never used them. I figured today was the day to change that.

I still need some work on using these tools. The ink was more dark gray than black, but usable. And clearly I need to work on my Spencerian. I feel like calling this quasi-Spencerian, but it’s where I’m at. And I do enjoy it.

I ground the ink and wrote the first version (more interested in the ink at that moment), then later decided to write it again. Still managed to make a spelling error (“year” should have an “s”…) ;)

@tiffany.c.a  I love all things Spencerian – thank you for sharing yours!  What I especially admire, and desire, is the use of this script for practical handwriting and communication. I appreciate that your post here is exactly that!

With effort, focus, guidelines, a light box and lots of attempts, I may be able to pull off a few acceptable letters or words, but when writing correspondence I get anxious, tighten up and mess up.   I like that you are writing yourself encouraging words in that beautiful script.

Love all of these! Due to circumstances beyond my control, I can’t get into my studio, so I’m playing on my ipad. I thought I would keep it simple and focus on just flourished Spencerian.  :)
