Tools & Supplies / Re: Oblique Holder
« on: April 16, 2014, 12:14:26 AM »
Gary, I think you're probably right on both accounts.

Christopher, I see what you're saying.

I'm a big supporter of buying local and/or supporting small businesses. This store has only just started hosting modern calligraphy workshops & I think those are the people they're stocking for. On the other hand, if you're a painter (watercolor, oil, mixed media, etc) they've got you covered and the staff is VERY knowledgeable in that regard. Their paper room is amazing and they've just opened a ceramics/pottery room! Also they're great at promoting art in the community (for adults, youth & kids). 8)

I'm just little surprised by this lady's response. I think as I get more knowledgeable about what I need/want maybe I'll be able to get them to order somethings for me.  :)

So, I was going to purchase an "starter" oblique holder online last week, but MyMan asked me to hold off on that purchase.

Turns out he went to our local art store to get me a surprise...when he asked the saleslady about oblique holders she told him, "oh, you don't want one of those. No one uses obliques anymore, your wife probably meant a straight one." What?! :o When I tried to explain to him that yes, many people including some masters and other amazing calligraphers use them all the time, he just shook his head and told me that this lady seemed very knowledgeable on the subject and I should probably listen to her. I'm not so sure...I'm starting to rethink my stance on supporting local businesses (at least this one).

On the "+" side, he did pick up a few nibs for me to try and the 9x12" Artograph LightPad 930 :D So, I'll soon be shopping online for an oblique holder and some more nibs!  ;)

Show & Tell / My first "project"
« on: April 14, 2014, 06:28:50 PM »
Ok, so here it is...my first "project"! This is the first thing I've done that hasn't been practicing my Copperplate, I would say this is loosely based on Erica's super cute "Donut Sunday". I made this card for MyMan for our 25th wedding anniversary (at about 1:30a)...I look at it and cringe (just a little) but he loves it and proudly displays it on his notebook and promptly posted it to FB that morning. I think I'll keep him!

I love seeing all of the different spaces everyone works in! I don't have a permanent space to work in yet, for now I set up a small folding table in our living room once the rest of the family goes to bed. Keeps me from "collecting" too many goodies! ;) One day when RKid moves out on his own I'll convert his room into my studio. ;D

Cheers!

So I was able to pickup some HP Premium Laser paper, a nice piece of felt & some sumi ink from our local art supply and I'm so happy I did! My thick & thin lines are much more distinct from each other and less wibbly-wobbly. ::)  Next step will probably be some sort of light box...I'd love to be able to see the guide lines. Erica, thanks for the tips! :)

What wonderful responses from everyone! Even though I'm a total n00b at calligraphy (not even a novice yet ;)) I found myself agreeing or identifying with something in nearly every post! So as of right now I'm in love with the feeling of accomplishment when I write a letter or word "beautifully" (totally in the eye of the beholder :o). Also, as I practice-practice-practice and feel the stress of the day fall away. :)

Cheers!

I love seeing everyone's IG, I'll be following you all shortly (currently at work so the fun has to wait). There's only a few posts on my IG so far (it's been a busy but uneventful year since I re-started my IG.) I hope to fill it with my creative endeavors and summer fun!

Hi Jean!

Your holders make me want to try oblique, as they are so lovely! And the engraving of the little bird is both dainty and colorful...I never realized engraving could be so colorful! Thank you for sharing some of your art with us! I look forward to seeing more!

Introductions / Hi from SoCal!
« on: March 08, 2014, 07:13:11 PM »
Hey everyone! Here's my intro...

I live in San Clemente CA (small town about 1/2 way between LA & San Diego) and have had an interest in calligraphy for as long as I can remember (even though, as a kid, my penmanship was less then perfect...a lot less!). Having said that, I recently took my first modern calligraphy workshop last month at the ripe old age of 45! (Not that 45 is old, 'cause I certainly don't feel old!) ;D After taking that class I started looking online for other recourses to help me improve my writing and found this wonderful forum! I also realised that in order for me to develop my own style I really needed a foundation to build upon and Erica's tutorials are awesome for that! Thank you Erica for sharing your knowledge and passion with us! Looking forward to sharing my progress with you!

Cheers!
