Hi guys!!! Can someone tell me their recommendations on paper that takes watercolor AND can be used for pointed pen calligraphy. My watercolor paper is too toothy.. and I need something similar to cardstock because I want to frame it. Any help would be much appreciated  :)

Tools & Supplies / About ink consistency
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:14:33 PM »
Hi guys!!! Quick question. How do you know if the ink's consistency is too thick or too thin?

Right now I have a bottle of sumi ink which I hadnt used in a while and it dried a bit and felt thick, so I added water in a dinky dip, but I think it was too much water since it started to bleed on the paper (not a good quality paper also I think).

I also have a bottle of walnut ink that I bought ready to use. I feel it is not thick enough, how can I know the ideal consistency to write if I'm not an experienced calligrapher?

I've been idle for a couple of months, and now I'm back and find this beauty of a homepage! I love it!!! It's organized, fresh, beautiful, I love the stamp links for social networks, and it has hydrangeas on it (my fave flowers).. It's perfect Erica, hooray!

Looking forward to continuing my practice and sharing this space with all the great people here in the forum.

Great @ash0kgiri !! I will do that! I was actually considering to start Salman's tutorials on minuscules before moving on to majuscules, so now that you say that, I've made up my mind to do it, so I'll start practicing and posting in Salman's tutorials section. Thank you  :)

Helloo!! New drills... starting with the majuscules. It's a bit challenging! Tried the Hunt 101 for the first time practicing the lower case alphabet and it doesn't look good, I think the nib was not well prepared, and also I can't control it like the Gs.. so I'll keep using it as a challenge until I get better control of it.

Thank you @ash0kgiri !! I appreciate your feedback very much!! I would like to learn Copperplate first. I now have Eleanor Winter's book and I've been observing the letters in the book. I still have to practice a lot the letter forms and understand them. My plan is to finish Erica's worksheets and then start Salman's tutorials.

Thanks a lot for your replies  :)

@Jessie W This looks wonderful! Truly beautiful. I'll let the experts give you their feedback on things to improve, and I'll just sit here admiring your work  :) (Love the quote too)

Thank you @brd4790 !!  :) still far from the sample, but I'm sure with practice and study and the help of the great people here, we will get there eventually. I've tried the Hunt 101, but not in my practice, just randomly to see how it works. It's a lot more flexible and responsive than the Nikko G, so you have to be careful of not pushing too hard, because it's easy to get blots. I'll look forward to seeing your progress in Salman's tutorials! Good luck in your practice too  :D

Thank you @brd4790 !

Actually, these are the printed practice sheets from Erica's tutorials, so the first word is the example done by Erica. As I'm a beginner, I'm sure in my case I still have to adjust my technique, and also I'm using the Nikko G nib which is not a very flexible nib, maybe it isn't helping me reach bolder shades and finer hairlines, but I like it for practice, for now. I'll try other nibs too so I can compare the strokes I can get with one or another. How is your practice going? I appreciate your feedback very much and from now on, I'll take it into consideration  :)

Hello!!!

New practice sheets, this time using the printed guidelines (But a multipurpose paper, which I don't think is the best, right?) I used an oblique holder for the first time for this practice, still getting the hang of it. I'm trying to be a little more observant of my practice. For example, When there are two Ps, one after the other, I write the second one smaller. Why? I have no idea, but will try to fix this. Also there are slant problems, still have to work on my ovals, the letters size is not consistent, etc. But I'll keep practicing, if you see anything I can improve in this stage, please do tell, I'll appreciate it  :)

By the way, I made my first mess with the ink, there was ink everywhere... I don't look forward to it happening again soon   :o
