I have a question for everyone. I want to write my checks with my oblique pen. I tried to sign one and the ink bled. Do I need different ink? I tried Higgins and I tried Sumi. Do I need to have "special" checks made?

I think it is the paper if the same ink is used with a different paper and it was OK. Try coating the paper first..hair spray or  clear spray paint?

That's something I've never heard of.  Doesn't the hairspray mean that the ink will not 'stick' afterward?

I don't know if you can have checks made. I have heard that you can write a check on any be it a napkin or a cow (a check is just a letter to your bank asking it to pay someone) But I am not sure if that is acceptable today with all the anti fraud measures.

I suggest you try out different inks and pens. Maybe gouache?

Also, don't write the amount in water soluble ink and sign in water proof ink, you will make a check washers job too easy.

I second Inkyfingers' hairspray idea. It works as a fixative or prep. I have used it many times on envelopes that bleed. Aquanet was the one I used but don't even know if they still make that!

I'll keep experimenting. There is a local print shop that prints checks. I'll contact them. I'll post my findings.

This idea of coating the paper was originally found on a posting here on TFF.  The shading and hairline for pointed pen is of most utility.

Gouache with gum arabic might work; I tend to reach for that on papers that bleed.

Ziller's inks are waterproof and quite reliable as non-bleeding inks! They need to be a bit diluted (with water) for pointed pen – and don't expect great hairlines.

Iron Gall ink seems to work on any paper. In the past it was used for writing cheques, but the paper in the 19th century might have been better quality.
