Title: Bonjour from Paris, France
Post by: valerie a. on March 15, 2016, 12:04:34 PM
Hello everyone and thank you so much Erica for letting me in ! I'm valerie, i'm French and i'm left-handed (that pretty well sums it all up  ;)). I've loved handwriting for a long time (did study uncial years ago) but i only just started studying Copperplate calligraphy and brush lettering on my own and found an amazingly creative and sharing community on Instagram, which led me here. My wish/objective this year is to study, practice and keep learning from you all !

Bonjour, Valerie!  Welcome.  Last year, around this time, I discovered Melodies Graphiques in Paris- what a wonderful shop!

Thanks for your kind words Bianca ! I know this shop very well, the former owner, Eric de Tugny, is a wonderful calligrapher (left-handed too  ;)). He hand-lettered my wedding invitation in 2003. I'll post it if you'd like to have a look at it !

Thanks again for the welcomes !

@Sybille : je te "connais" déjà (forum Encre et Lumière, je crois, puis Instagram. Tu m'as "fait" acheter le livre de C. Mediavilla  ;))

@Bianca and Leanda : Here you go, hope you won't be disappointed, that damn thing of a wedding invitation is so difficult to photograph and i only have two mock-ups left so the printing quality is quite poor. I just can't put my hands back on the original calligraphy piece, must have put it away very carefully so it wouldn't be lost. We've moved house twice since then...

But back to the invitation. We created and made it ourselves, but for the calligraphy by E. de Tugny which we scanned and printed. The idea was to have the piece made as a booklet. We used a variety of papers: mulberry paper as the outside cover, premium blue-gray tracing paper (calque in French) as the inner cover, and "cloudy" white translucent paper for the inside where the invitation was calligraphed. We wanted our "faire-part" to be understated with a calligraphy twist, and we were all about transparency (so the recipient would literally "see through the inner pages". Hope that makes sense. The envelope was translucent too.)

And here are the piece itself and a close-up pic of Mr. de Tugny's beautiful hand-wirting (once again, this was way more beautiful IRL, printing was low-res here as this was a mock-up i made for positioning).

Thank you so much for sharing that!  I just got totally lost looking at that beautiful handwriting, and variations in the ink... gorgeous.  I love the book concept, too, and the paper choice!

Bonjour and welcome Valerie! Merci beaucoup for sharing your beautiful wedding invitation. The calligraphy, papers, and colors were all wonderfully chosen and put together! I have been to Melodies Graphiques twice and own some lovely things from there. Wonderful memories!

Thank you Yana, i'm learning and practicing so i'm afraid i don't have much to show  ;)

@Suzie L Thank you very much! And yes Mélodies Graphiques is a nice little shop. Eric de Tugny is no longer the owner though and the shop has been taken over by someone else as of February. I was lucky enough to see E. de Tugny one more time before he left at the end of January, and to be given his new address and phone number. He now lives in the south-east of France.
