Watercolor and calligraphy
« on: April 09, 2015, 12:37:40 PM »
Greetings from Montreal, Canada!

My name is Eric, I am a software developer by day (for almost thirty years now - so you can laugh if I refer to myself as a newbie!) and a beginner calligrapher by night.

A few months ago I stumbled upon a watercolor sketching book and I started getting into learning about watercolor and the joy of becoming a supplies junkie  :) .  But very soon thereafter I bought a nib and tried my hand at calligraphy and failed miserably.

Since then, and inspired by many outstanding people out there including this very community, I have managed to move forward from a technical standpoint.

My current favorite nib is the Nikko G.

Now I am still experimenting with different kinds of inks.   I am currently doing well with watercolor (without using a brush to feed the nib), with Kohinoor drawing ink (which is waterproof and works well on top of watercolor), with acrylic paint, and most notably with gouache (in my opinion very well suited to calligraphy, unfortunately not waterproof).  As you can see:  no sumi ink!  (scandalous!  ;D  my fingers are clean)

My other interests are in music and the arts in general including photography.

It is a pleasure to be part of the community!  I would also like to congratulate you all for your work, it is both impressive and inspirational!

Regards, Eric

Hi Eric, welcome to the Flourish Forum! You've truly stumbled upon the greatest treasure tove of information for calligraphy. I've recently dabbled in watercolor myself, but for painting reasons. I haven't tried to use them as an ink yet. The Nikko G is a great beginner's nib, though it didn't really work for me, sadly. I loved that you have already ventured into different mediums as ink. It so much fun to explore when you're a beginner. Can't wait to see your work and progress!

Thanks Alice!

I just looked at your Instagram... Wow!  Lovely watercolor flowers, amongst other things!
And I see that you have tried the Finetec gold pigments... I have that on my next web shopping cart order!   They look so incredible on black paper!

Thank you for those kind words. I love my FineTec gold palette, it's really fun to play with. I just ordered more FineTec colors to play with. Will post them once I've experimented with them  :)

Welcome from another software developer/photographer! I'm also trying to pick up watercolor -- it seems to fit so well with calligraphy.  :)

Hi Eric, welcome! I love playing with watercolor too, so easy and they make up a beautiful array of colours! :) My favorite nib is Nikko G, too, it's so easy to use! Do you mind telling me how you use acrylic paint in calligraphy, though? I wanted to try it but I was unsure how to create the correct consistency :x

Hi Eric, welcome to the forum!

I do some web development, but only on the side of my day job, and even that's been partly replaced by calligraphy!

Welcome to the forum, good to have you here!  Watercolor is one thing that I feel completely incompetent at, but would love to learn!
