Feathering issue
« on: September 10, 2015, 10:33:00 PM »
Hi friends! I'm a newbie to the calligraphy arena - so please forgive me if I'm not using the correct terms when it comes to describing my issue.

I'm lettering an ornate certificate - using sumi moon palace ink.  The ink immediately started feathering.  So I stopped - and avoided what could have been a catastrophe!

I searched "feathering" throughout the forum and came across several posts referring to pounce, hairspray and gum sandarac.  I want to avoid using hairspray if possible. Can someone be so kind to clear up the difference between these other products and maybe explain how the product is used? I'd be so thankful!

First off what kind of paper are you using?

I guess you don't get to choose your paper, then.  Pounce historically refers to either powdered cuttlefish or gum sandarac, and your chances of getting the former are probably not too good anyway.  Sandarac comes either as lumps or pre-powdered: you wrap it up in a little linen bag and dab away at the paper conservatively, then remove the excess with a brush or feather.  A more modern alternative would be draughting powder, which might be easier to source in a hurry.

Maybe another ink … I like Ziller's acrylic inks for paper that tends to feathering. Jean also mentioned another brand of acrylic ink for that … don't you have an option to test the paper??

I tried gum sandarac, and it can leave tiny traces on the paper (like powder or something) and make it a bit more matte. But maybe that was just my experience.

Estafa: I picked up the Ziller's acrylic ink today! I'll try it out and see how it works!

Oh, good luck! For pointed pen you need to thin it a bit (I put some ink – after good stirring, NOT shaking – in a smaller container and add just some drops until the ink flows nicely). I think the glossy works a bit better than the soot black, but you might think different :). Let us know how it goes!

Claire,

Feathering is a nightmare, as you have discovered.  I used to blame the paper, but then realized the problem can also be (1) the nib, (2) the ink, and/or (3) or a combination of all of the above.  I've used gum sandarac with some success.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Can you lay hands on some Pearl-ex powder?  This summer, I had to address 150 wedding invitations and the envelopes were the worst I've ever experienced for feathering!  Hair spray & gum sandarac had no effect.   I tried sealing the envelopes with spray fixative.  (It sort-of worked, but made the envelopes "toothy" and "grabby", so they were hard to letter.)  I tried acrylic & that worked reasonably well.  Finally, I tried Pearl-ex & got no feathers on an untreated envelope.  The issue you might face is finding the right color, but if you're using Sumi, black is probably OK & black is available in Pearl-ex.  I also go good results from Noodler's Feather-X ink.  (It's available on Amazon.)  I ended up making a couple of samples for the bride with Noodler's & Pearl-ex & let the bride choose.  She liked the Pearl-ex because it is "raised" on the envelope (when you run your finger across it, you can feel the ink) & that was something that was important to her.  Try to be patient & work through several solutions, as there is not "one thing" that will work for everyone in every situation.

Send me a personal message if I can help!

Janis

Is the any chance you could scan it and print it out on nicer paper?  You could even edit out the descriptions below the lines.  Is your client completely sold on that paper?

thank you everyone so much for your help! I ended up using the ziller's ink.  It didn't feather as much as the sumi moonpalace - however, it still feathered a little.  I just went back over the feathering with a light hairline and it turned out okay.. not ideal! but with the paper I was using, it was the best I could do.
