Day 7 - Drip
« on: October 07, 2023, 05:31:02 PM »
Hi there!
I've been playing with elongating my italic letters. I'm shy with variations so I will try to be a little bit more bold in the next prompts.
This first 7 days of Inktober have given me a lot of food for thought on where I need to improve.

Anyways, can't wait to wake up to everyone's prompts!

Night night!
Oh crêpe!

Sorry such a long post. A week’s worth of blab to say. Trying to be brief.

So, the page is a little busy. I made small boxes to simplify my focus. (And then sometimes I still tried to fit in whole compositions!)

Generally it was a good idea - multiple on one page. This approach solved some issues but caused another. I started running into a little bind with color choice - some compositions beg a certain color but might cause color clashes with other boxes. I could: 1. not care and have a cacophony of color on the page, or 2. work towards a more cohesive page. I decided the latter.

Overall, I liked each day’s process and result, and that they all share a page. (8x10 Stillman and Birn Zeta journal.)

Day 1: Dream
The “D” ended up being thicker than I intended because the juicy pocket brush put down a lot of ink when I started filling in. The tip on the pocket brush is sooo pointy that I thought it would get into the small spaces well. It did and then some. I learned to switch between the pocket brush and the fineliner.

Day 2: Spider
Not a huge fan, although I respect that they are God’s creation and appreciate that they are good for the garden. Still, I decided to draw the plant.

Day 3: Path
Hymn lyrics. I was thinking something map-like for this but passed.

Day 4: Dodge
I enjoyed looking at the old emblems and trying to letter them.
@K-2 - I also TRIED to draw the ram’s head, but it came out looking too much like an imp and not an animal. Yours looks spot on. I erased mine.

Day 5: Map
I’ve been wanting to get into drawing maps, so this was great practice. Briefly thought about trying the restaurant’s lobster logo but decided to leave it alone (after the ram’s head incident). I’m learning to pick and choose elements. I’m happy with the choices made and the outcome.

Day 6: Golden
Had to break out the pointed pen at some point. (Ink = Creative Kinds paints.)

Day 7: Drip
For some reason I decided to look up the slang usage. There’s other slang I didn’t know about. Method was to wet the caps and drop watercolor in.

Extra: Challenger
Had to try lettering the Challenger emblem. Wanted to make those stripes the bold red they are in real life - but that would have seemed out of place on the page. Soooo, I hope Dodge doesn’t mind. (The stripes are not slanted the way they should be anyway.)

Extra: Journal  entry

@Mary_M - That is so beautiful. I like that "r"!
@Lucie Y - Italic is such an austere beauty!

I kind of hate this one. It took multiple tries with different inks, and I'm still not happy with it. I had trouble controlling the ink on the enormous witch pen, because x-height = 25mm. But on the other hand, I think the decorative capital has some potential. It wasn't a bad idea at any rate, and I bet if I did 50 more of them with different inks, I'd get the technique down.

I'll have something better tomorrow!

@K-2 - writing that large is very challenging - at least for me. I really like decorative capitals but have yet to try. I was looking at Inktober 2022 posts and saw the knot work dog you made. He was delightful!

There is absolutely nothing for you to be concerned about. You can certainly hold your own.
