Tools & Supplies / Re: Sumi for $1.50?!

i got the same deal from daiso :)  but i took the the bottle which says sumi drawing ink, and it works fantastic!  i only have the sumi ink that i got from maybelle's workshop to compare it with...and honestly i like it better :)  it's darker, but still produces fine hairlines when necessary.   plus, the consistency is already ink-like so you don't have to add water.

oh i didnt see that one!

not a huge blooper but I wished they didnt mess up Linda's lovely envelope. My apt suite was clearly written, i didnt need the big black marker too.

Tools & Supplies / Sumi for $1.50?!
« on: July 20, 2014, 02:48:29 PM »
Hi yall!

I stopped by my local Daiso yesterday for washi tape that I didnt need =) and stumbled across some Sumi ink near the brush calligraphy supplies. For a 1.50 USD I HAD to buy it. here is a sample for comparison

this only difference I noticed was that the Daiso one was a little thinner than my Kuretake. But for the price I am definitely keeping it in stock.

Happy practicing =)

after seeing Prashad's post about using dropper bottles a little while back, I've been taking this little kit with me to work :-[ I practice and doodle a bit during lunch and after if I'm waiting for my boyfriend.

I use a Canson Universal sketch pad, the paper is thin enough that I can see guildlines =) its been great for practicing envelope layouts without wasting actual envelopes

I wrap my holder(its a short one, only 6 inches or 15cm)  in a paper towel and toss it in the pencil bag. ink in a bottle, and some micron pens

Coffee & Nib-bles / Re: nib & airplane
« on: July 16, 2014, 01:05:25 PM »
I dont think the nibs should be a problem, Ive brought needle point, small scissors, knitting hooks, etc on a plane with no problem.

I went on a weekend trip back to Texas this weekend and had decided that it was too much of a hassle to bring my calligraphy stuff since I wasn't really going to have "time" to do any practicing. Then I had a small panic attack as I was checking instagram before turning my cell off wishing I had brought something! I was in calligraphy withdraw all weekend :-\  I might be slightly obsessed

That's pretty. How do you use it? Do you add water?
Just added distilled water and used a brush to load the nib!

Yes, calligraph is a verb. So, "I calligraphed the invitations" would be proper grammar. It does feel awkward to say, I guess because you don't really hear it in every day conversation.

Just for anyone who may want to know, the emphasis is on the first syllable (calligraph). I just say that because I was unsure myself until I looked it up!

thanks! every time I type it, the squiggly red line pops up and it makes me second guess myself

Tools & Supplies / new gold ink!
« on: July 15, 2014, 01:22:49 PM »
I found a beautiful gold ink for only $11 at my local Blick's Art Supply store! it was near the other sumi inks and comes in a shallow porcelain dish. there was a silver one as well. No legible name on it but after some research I found out its Yasutomo Sumi-e watercolor in red gold. here is a picture (hiro 41 for scale lol)

I've never used the fintec palette so I cant compare but I thought the ink was the prettiest thing I've ever seen =)
here it is in use
