Introductions / Re: Hi from Virginia Beach

Welcome, Hillary!

Excited to see another calligrapher from the 757. I'm in Norfolk :). If you ever want to get together to talk pen and ink, let me know! I'm always down for connecting with local calligraphers.

Welcome Linda!

Where are you in Virginia? I'm over here in Norfolk!

I typically throw out my practice as I write it. About 1-2 pieces from every practice 'session' I really like and end up pinned to a giant cork board sprawling across the wall my desk is up against. When the cork board fills I take about 3/4 of it down, everything but the most recent stuff usually, figure which of those still look really good to me and throw the rest out. The good ones get taped into my sketchbook on free space between drawing or on empty pages.

Oh, Jamie, I love the sketchbook idea! Right now I have about 3,209,369,846 loose pages and even just pasting them into a book would make things MUCH more organized. Thanks for the suggestion!

I call it sifting.
Every once in a while, you sift through everything - discard some of it - and save the stuff that reminds you of something.
It is a wonderful thing to have examples from all the years - but saving everything can be a burden.

Each category has 3 sections -
1
all time favorites
2
pretty good, worth saving
3
probably wouldn't miss it - discard when files are too crowded.

Thanks for your advice, Jean. I like the categorization system. I went back through the files at my office after reading this (haven't even started on the ones in my house!) and tossed a few more pages. I appreciate your help!

Hi Flourish Friends,

I am moving to a new studio that has room for lots of growth and space to sprawl all my calligraphy stuff out (hooray!). While packing up my current office, I came across pages and pages of old practice sheets, exemplars from calligraphy class, final practice projects, sketches from logo designs, etc.

How do you store all of this stuff? Do you keep it? Do you chuck it? I was actually really inspired by looking through my old stuff because I can see how much I've improved over the years–I'd hate to part with it. I've only been at it for a few years, so I'm curious as to whether some of this stuff is worth saving or not. My calligraphy teacher once gave me an example of her work from 1994, so I know she holds on to her work, even just practice pages, haha.

I'd love to hear how you organize all of your inked up paper and examples. Thanks in advance!

Last week I had a calligraphy nightmare–I dreamt that I forgot about registration and couldn't get into any of the classes I wanted and couldn't decide what else to take because I failed to read the course descriptions.

Thankfully, it was all a dream. I'm registered for IAMPETH, got into the classes I wanted and CAN.NOT. WAIT to meet you all and study alongside you. And PORTLAND!

Tips for Lefties / Re: Tips for Left Handed Calligraphers
« on: December 18, 2015, 01:12:02 PM »
My calligraphy teacher, Betsy Rivers Kennedy is actually a left hander. She wrote Insights Into Left-Handed Calligraphy, a book that Paper & Ink Arts sells, if you're interested. I can't necessarily vouch for how helpful the book is (simply because I'm a righty), but Betsy has some serious talent and I'm always impressed with how she writes so beautifully, even upside down :).

Yes yes yes yes yes!

It's already the most wonderful time of the year and adding an exchange makes it even better. Can't wait!

Connie I got your... package today. xD
LOVED IT.

I've also received mail from Christen and Eunice. Thanks!

List 3 letters are on point. I arrived at my desk to find letters from Connie and you, too Jamie :). So much fun! Eunice, I got yours last week. My office gets spookier and spookier with each new letter :). Love it!

Thanks, friends!

Hello all,

My exchange mail might be a few days delayed, as life got a bit full this last week.

My grandad went into hospital at the start of the week, clearly at the end of his life, so I've been there with him. He died last night (and it was a genuinely peaceful end of a 91 year long, full life) so I'm now on hand for my dad & aunt, and may have to neglect some things to support them.

Anyhoo, I will be posting my mail to List 3, but wanted to explain why it may arrive post-Hallowe'en.

Best wishes all

So sorry to hear about your grandad. Sending prayers for you and your family.  I hope that the mail coming your way brings you a little bit of joy during this hard time. Looking forward to getting mail from you, even if it's after Halloween :).
