Tools & Supplies / How long do you use a nib?
« on: September 22, 2015, 11:37:52 AM »
I am wondering, how long do you use a nib until you replace a new one? I found my nib gets scratchy very fast. My Brausse 66 last for about 5 hours (constant writing). After that, it goes scratchy. It still writes, but I do not feel it is as smooth as when it is new. I am a sucker in maintaining a nib. Usually I just wipe it with a paper towel after writing. I know I am so bad!!! Please share how long do you use a nib and the maintenance too.

Tools & Supplies / Re: prepping envelopes to prevent feathering
« on: September 14, 2015, 11:39:48 AM »
Hi Angelina,

When you mentioned the ink was Winston and Newton drawing ink, I cringed a little bit because I had a bad experience with it. It feathered very bad on the paper. You can try adding gum arabic, but keep in mind to do it in a seperate container (pour some of the ink to another jar, not pour the gum arabic straight to the ink bottle). And you might need quite a lot of gum arabic to handle the feather. If nothing works, maybe you can discuss it with your friend to change the brand of the ink, but not the color (or as closest as possible with the original color that she approved). Hope you can settle this envelope issue.

Cheers,
Ernie

Camille, your progress is awesome! I could see it is getting better and better. And boy..you have the patience which I do not have. You rewrite the same words for an entire page. Pheww...

It has been awhile since I last 'hang out' in the forum. This is fun thread, Roseann!

I would change my name to Jessica, which is clearly everybody agree that is a female name. My name is Ernie (in Indonesia we pronounce it Air-knee). And I am a female. Once I visited Australia and listed my name at a ski rental. The guy called 'ERNIE!' Then I stood in front of him and he still shouted 'ERNIE!' And looked at my brother. :(

I never took out my LP from my oblique, and place it in a container (nib facing up) near my other stationery. When I was in a hurry and needed to take a pen, I accidentally wounded my palm because of that sharp nib. But thank God it was not something serious, but that shot on the palm did awakened me. Lol.

I know...the answer must be practice practice and practice. But do you have any specific drill to reduce shaky hand? I find that writing in good posture and comfortable arm position might help. And how I hate when I am doing a piece for a gift, I am sooo nervous and made silly wobbly lines. But when I am on a casually practice, my upstroke is perfect (OK, not perfect, neaaarly perfect). Gah!! Do you think writing faster will make it better? Because I see so many people could write in a snail tempo, but amazingly steady. Hm...?!

Such a beautiful post Joi. I agree with Schin, your works seems like you have been doing it for years. Always love your post. Thank you for your generosity for giving me input as well. Keep writing and creating, Joi.

Tools & Supplies / Getting tools and supplies in Canada
« on: December 08, 2014, 01:46:00 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have a question where to get tools and supplies in Canada? I have made a purchase last month from PIA and got it shipped to Canada. The shipping fee is quite reasonable, but the tax made me cringe so bad. Learning from the experience, shopping from US online store and got it shipped to Canada is a bad idea!!

I have relatives that live in Canada that traveled occasionally to Indonesia. If I can order the supplies from the stores that are based in Canada, logically it would be much affordable, right? Or it does not have much different in the prices because they have to pay taxes as well?

I have to share this ASAP to you because I feel that all of you had given me the encouragement and supports for doing this. So the workshop happened this morning from 10.30-15.00. The class fully taught by me (the earlier plan, they will join the class with brush pen calligraphy but then the plan was canceled)

There were 12 participants. It started with half an hour of introduction. Went through all the supplies. Going through all the details. After that, it was lunch time. After lunch, we started our lesson from all basic strokes, then go through the minuscules. But, did not get through all alphabets. Then I gave a quick preview how to do the majuscules.

At the end of the workshop, we did a small activity which is making a quote on a card using gouache. Then the greatest part is we got a sponsor from a stationery store that sponsored scrapbooks stuff for them to decor the card and envelopes. Including wax seal!!!! Yes, I know! I want to be the participant, not the teacher! Lol.

It was a great experience for me. I am very thankful for the workshop organizer who had approached me and talked me into doing this. I am so grateful for all of you here who encourage me as well. And esp to Gail! Yes, our calligrapher/doctor/sunnies fan. Thank you thank you thank you.

Congratulations, Natascha!! Very happy foy you :)

Off to prep some tools to pen meet. Woot woot. We are having pen meet with Indonesian calligraphers. Very glad that finally we can actually meet everyone (hopefully many will join us) directly, not in the cyber world only. Calligraphy has given so many benefits (except $$$ fly away to buy supplies), including meeting new people and much better, new FRIENDS!
