since we're all still "on a high" with the summer exchange...why don't we have a birthday exchange? maybe we can have a list of all our birthdays, and then send cards to all celebrants who will celebrate their birthdays on a certain month?
what do you guys think? :)

- Update the birthday list and other details on the doc.
You might have to check the bday list once in a while to see if there are additional peeps who added their birthdays.

My thinking is that perhaps we have a shared list that we can all access - say hosted on Google Docs or something? Or maybe a section of the Closed Flourish where we all list our birthdays, and then each month, addresses can be exchanged by PM, perhaps.

This is a fantastic idea!! I LOVE this!
If we did a Google doc, that would take the pressure off the organizer to manage the list all of the time. I think there does need to be an organizer who can divide the list into smaller groups, though. For example, if we had 30 people born in August, I don't know that I could send that many cards, and I definitely couldn't do that many on top of another exchange, like the summer exchange. But if the list were divided into groups of 4-6 people, I think that's reliably manageable. I think most people could probably send that many per month?
But we'd have access to the Google doc, so we could send to everyone that month if we wanted to and had the time.
Count me in if the number in any given month isn't too much to take on!

if we host it on google docs, can anyone (who will be participating) still edit the existing list already (and not just make a new submission every time)? sorry, if my question doesn't make sense...im a noob when it comes to google docs :(

We could make it so that it can be edited by anyone who has the invitation!
I guess my concern with Google Docs is privacy of people's addresses ... I'm not sure how to get around that, though. I mean, we will have to give out addresses if we want cards!

Great idea! I'm interested.
Would it be possible for only the people interested in sending a card to get the addresses somehow? There is a tab above that says Calendar and some people's birthdays are already listed. What if those interested in sending a birthday card simply message the people of that month they want to send to for their address? That way we're aware of who is getting our addresses and are in control of who we give it to.
But would that be too complicated? Organization is not exactly my strong suit.

I think Google Docs is the best idea so far.
How about that:
Everyone who wants to participate sends me an e-mail to [email protected]
I then create a Google Doc and invite you to join (since I only send it to your e-mail-addresses, whatever you put into that document stays between us).
In the Document, we will add our birthdays, sorted by month.
It MIGHT look like the attached image (oops, I may have accidentally created it already ...)
And, whenever there's a birthday, everyone who is in the mood to send a card, just sends one. The recipient won't have any idea who will send a card ;D
Or if you're thinking "Hey, I'm in the mood to send a card, let's see if there's an upcoming birthday!" that's cool, too.
What do you think?
PS: If I have tge time, I might also create a calendar and make it available to you.

this is such a great idea. I just participated in summer exchange and that was so fun!
Another side question: should email addresses be included in the google doc? just for communication purposes in case this goes on for a while (years?) we would want to make sure that people were still interested in receiving cards and that they had not moved, etc...in case they were for some reason not active on the forum...? thinking long term here...

Great idea! I am writing a letter each day of summer, so I will just have more things to send now. There are 93 days and I have sent many without returns letters (darn family, they send me a thank you text). My mom is my pen pal still and my FF sisters here too.
I might just send your November bday card early then. Haha, j/k. Well maybe not.
I will get Moya's out when I return to my desk. Unless you want an Outer Banks postcard of a lighthouse for your bday. ;D

Hi everyone,
I'd like to thank you for the beautiful card I got over the past few month for my birthday, after that I got stucked by a hand pain and had to stop writing to make it rest and recover. I'm not done with that and that's why I could not send anyone card, note etc... I just made it quite in schedule for the autumn exchange and then had to completely stop.
I still have a bendage over my hand but I miss writing so much I'll try to make a little writing when I can, I hope I'll be able to send card soon. :D

I was having a very hard month. Personal issues that caused a lot of stress. I was becoming quite depressed.
Then I started receiving all the lovely birthday cards everyone made me and it started cheering me up.

You can send as many as you want. The last time I checked the list there were 70 for the whole year. However, there are 4 in June and 4 in July for a start. Additions are made so I try to check it periodically to add to my printed list. I hope this helps.

I saw some card exchanges on instagram and boy, aren't they super pretty.....

So happy to have received my first birthday exchange envelope today! From chocolate buckeyes I'm going to resist opening it until my actual birthday though. I think. Probably. Yeah.

Last fall I decided to send something to every person listed in the Birthday Exchange. So far I've sent greetings to all the names for October, November, December and part of January. Today the ones for January that go overseas are getting mailed. Hmm. . . that's 29 sent and 60 more to do in 2016. (Yikes!)
There have been some posts by people looking for pen pals. Joining the Birthday Exchange is another way to do this. Not everyone on the list sends cards (in fact, not many, in my experience) but once in a while someone will write back.
I'm fundamentally lazy (confession) but this motivates me to practice and to try new things. Plus, I know how much I love getting pointy pen snail mail, and I like imagining the birthday greetings are making someone else have that same joy at the mailbox.

It's never too late to sign up for the birthday exchange. Look at the very first post; it tells you what to do.
My goal starting in October sometime was to send everyone on the list a birthday greeting. I managed to do this until February. It was great to have a reason to practice. Maybe next year I will be able to send greetings to the March through October birthday babies.

I've spoken to several people on the list with various birthdays and it seems like the exchange is pretty much dead.
New people sign up regularly and there's over 100 people signed up but people aren't sending anything anymore. ;)
