Extended Italic
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:07:41 PM »
This is extended Italic, producing a square-letter format. It was written with a broad-edged William Mitchell dip nib and is shown here at a slight enlargement.

Very attractive, quite contemporary looking - and very well written, as we would expect : )

Interesting.  If you'd slapped that in front of me and asked me what I'd call it, the word "Italic" wouldn't have come to mind at all.

Maybe it will grow on me in the same way that uncial has  ;D
Fun to play with scripts though.

Interesting. I'd like to see more letter forms. To my exhausted eyes, it looks kind of like the love child from Uncial and Italian's wild night together on Roundhand island.

Here's some more lettering in the same style.

Interesting. I'd like to see more letter forms.

Here's another piece from my archives. This is basically the same Italic variation, but written slightly less extended. This extract is about 40 years old, being written at a time when I was heavily involved in calligraphy for several hotels and restaurants- Menus: Wine lists etc.
This work came to an end with the general availability of backroom Desk Top Publishing, killing off hand-lettered work which was considered to be unnecessarily expensive for the purpose. I still get the occasional special one-off menu or retirement scroll for special functions, but to all intents and purposes, this avenue for calligraphy is closed - at least, in my part of the UK.

I have to say that I'm not entirely sorry. Writing out a seven-page wine list can be very tedious. :)

Cranachan
Dessert
Cranachan is a traditional Scottish dessert. In modern times it is usually made from a mixture of whipped cream, whisky, honey and fresh raspberries, with toasted oatmeal soaked overnight in a little bit of whisky.

I know you were asking...
