Open Flourish | General Discussion / German Roundhand/Rundschrift
« on: August 14, 2019, 04:58:38 AM »
There was some discussion  about the German Roundhand also known as Rundschrift in another thread, but as that was not the main topic of that thread, I thought it would start a new one. I recently found some new information about its use.

Here is a link that contains a font based on Rundschrift as well as an short explanation of it use, complete with an example. The blue picture is a diagram of a sign for the railways, the diagram is labelled in Rundschrift. This apparently was very common use for the script.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Broad Edge Calligraphy on Canvas
« on: July 11, 2019, 06:30:36 AM »
My current project is to put a verse on a piece of stretched canvas. I was planing on using flat brushes, but the smallest brush I have is big enough for my largest letters.  Finding a smaller brush is hard, as the sizes aren't listed in mm. Can someone recommend a brush, or is it possible with a nib?

I have a new pen holder, but the nibs are really hard to pull out. Is there a way to loosen it up?

Can Elfen Fraktur, or a variation be written? It is described as monoline, but it certain lines are thinner. Perhaps it was written with a square Redis?

What do you do for numbers? Do you have a set for each script, or one for all etc.

Here is a sample of my cursives italic. Don't worry about being nice, I know it needs work. I am working from David Harris' exemplar.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Sütterlin Doodle
« on: July 23, 2018, 06:06:51 AM »
Today google honors Sütterlin, the designer of the German script that bears his name. It isn't exactly calligraphy, being designed so that kids could easily write it, it is based on the Kurrent script,  but is more suitable to a ball point pen, as it lacks shading. Kurrent is influenced by Fraktur and was banned along with Sütterlin by the Nazis. Interestingly, Sütterlin designed a latin script,  and students learned both with the latin script being used for foreign words or works, similar to the practice of italicizing foreign words in newspapers.

I have seen some of Rudolf Koch's work, does anybody know of a good source to learn some of the scripts he designed?
