Just wanted to say I love Denis Brown calligraphy work.
I  follow him on his facebook page and he has some updates.

It seems now his course is available online instead of a DVD.
Is an advanced course by the way...and is about Italics.
I havent' got this, because I'm not that advanced yet.

He used to sell the course in  DVD and it seems that for some reason regarding browser updates, is not working properly...So he is asking people who bought his DVD and are having problems to check this page:

http://calligraphy.tv/frameset/help.html#DVDproblem

So I thought I would post here for the benefit of anyone who bought his DVD or likes his work...

Disclaimer, I'm not affiliated, I'm not making money, nobody asked me to post here, I'm just sharing info.

I'm looking for this paper but can't find in the USA...Any stores carry?
The paper that I really love for ink is Canson Pro layout but is so expensive...

Sometimes when I feel I am not improving when I hit a plateau, I sometimes take a little break and I try to practice something else...and then when I come back it seems I make some progress...

I watched his video on Vimeo about the straight holder years ago...and I got thinking about that as I'm still learning.

If I am not mistaken, I think I heard Paul say that the Oblique holder was an invention of the American people to write Spencerian...

If I heard correctly, that means that the Copperplate or English Roudhand style that used to be written in England or Europe before the invention of the oblique had to be done with a straight pen...Is that correct?

Also that old english was more upright and taller then styles such as engrosser's scripts, Bill Lilly's style and maybe some more are the which seem to benefit more from Oblique holders....

What do you guys think?

Hi guys
just an update...I am taking that class on domestika with Ricard Russelout...on how to write in italics and create an ex-libris, add flourishes and so on...

so well done....I didn't know that Ricard Russelout was that famous..and I have seen his work before in books and didn't know...but then again tehre are so many famous designers out there... I can't remember all their names....

His work is more commercial since he worked in advertising,  but is great. The course is like 3.30 hours long, so much history..he shows his work and books where it was published, shows lots of examples, and then he teaches his italic, and how to make an ex-libris....No computers all done by hand...besides just scanning the artwork in the end. He gives some examples and guidelines and flourishes examples for download as well....The most interesting is not learning italics, but seen how he works, and looking over his shoulder...

Another interesting thing...he is active in the forum!

Okay I watched the class, and is pretty cool. It even teaches how to load the pen without having to buy cartridges and all types of  inks that will work best....a lot of tips and tricks....

I have yet to do the exercizes....but......

the class I really really wanted to take is the next class, the 3rd class in her list where she is going to teach some modern gothic....But it might take a long time for the third class to launch...

Did you guys know he has online videos that you can rent on Vimeo
they are not expensive...and last time I checked you can stream for a period of 1 year.

I have not taken any yet, but I'm being eyeballing some for a while.

Caroligian, italic, brush lettering basic, black letter, basic roman...

I reactivated my membership just because of that class...
but I'm eager to watch the class 2...
The class 1 was up for five weeks, so I was hoping that the class 2 would come up pretty soon...I was guessing it would be one a month?

does anyone know?

Hi guys....
I got the hammermmil color copy 28lb 100brightness, I hear that is what many calligraphers used to practice...I bought a ream... I like the paper, was drawing with sumi ink and using alcohol markers on it...it actually scans nicely... Defintelly cheaper than the canson layout pad....

But when I'm trying to use for calligraphy practice, it beads up a little...I am using a summi ink, Yasumoto, not the green bottle, and a Zebra nib and a Tachikawa nib... when I try to write, the ink dumps to fast on the paper and it beads up a little, so I cant square of the end of the letters...Should I dilute the ink, and maybe add some gum arabic?  Any tricks and tips?
