In the spirit of Christmas, I would like to gift my extra copy of Eleanor Winter's "Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy, A Step by Step Manual." It is a duplicate Christmas gift from last year, unused, and in mint condition. I'll mail it USPS media mail within the United States. The earliest I can place in the mail would be Monday the 23rd, so I don't think it would arrive before Christmas. If interested, please PM. Thanks! Edit: I have decided to wait until after Christmas, on December 27, to pick a recipient. I thought there may be members who have this book on their wish list and won't know if they could use the one I have until after presents are opened. I hope you all will understand. Thanks!

The book has been gifted. Thanks

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Everyday use of dip pen and ink
« on: December 11, 2019, 01:54:03 PM »
As I continue my ongoing learning and practice of Copperplate and modern calligraphy, I find myself using a dip pen and ink for everyday writing tasks as well. I am starting to prefer writing in my journals and records with my calligraphy tools rather than the fountain pens that I have used over a lifetime. I think that the dip pen slows my writing making it more thoughtful and concise. My normal cursive writing has become a bit of a mashup of Copperplate and cursive with occasional Spencerian detours. For more than 60 years, I have been a collector and user of vintage fountain pens. Now, a plain straight pen holder fitted with a Nikko G pen, an oblique holder with a Brause 66 EF, and a bottle of Daniel Smith walnut ink are always on my desk and ready to hand.

Anyone else prefer to write in their journals, write correspondence, or just make lists and notes using calligraphy tools?

Hi Heidi! Welcome to the forum!

That looks pretty close to me, allowing for varieties of personal writing and possible personalized shorthand style. Interesting.

Tools & Supplies / Re: Cleaning your nib...cloth Vs paper towel.

I haven't used a linen wipe so I can't comment on that - my wife's linen cabinet is off limits and I haven't asked permission. Some time ago, we were dining in a restaurant that offered large paper napkins that had a feel like linen, tightly woven and virtually dust and lint free. I asked for a was given a small stack of them and that is what I use to clean pens. I've never had a snag or catch using them. Prior to that used good quality paper towels and had numerous problems.

My favorite place to buy vintage stamps is from http://murphs-stamps.com/ - he is super cool. What I usually do is buy packets of $25 worth of stamps at a time and that lasts awhile. You only pay face value plus .49 cents for shipping (you pay by check after you've received the stamps in the mail). You can even tell him themes you want, like space, nature, etc, and stamp value ranges. I always get a great variety and am never disappointed :).

The link for murphsstamps.com doesn't work for me. I Googled it and find no other link. Perhaps they have closed? Suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Writing surface preference

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and comments on sloped vs flat writing surfaces. My wife picked up an artists sketching tote board that is 19" x 19" and has two paper clamps at the top. I am trying it on my desk with a strip of Styrofoam under the top portion to create a bit of slope. So far, I am finding is more comfortable for me. Time will tell. Again, thanks to everyone.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Writing surface preference
« on: March 26, 2019, 12:40:21 AM »
I am learning Copperplate lettering and am wondering if there is a preferred writing surface that would work best for me. I currently am using a flat top desk with the paper placed on top of a same sized backer made of card stock. Is it best to write on a flat level surface or on a slightly inclined work surface such as a writing slope or similar surface? The videos that I have watched so far show a flat desk or table top but I think that period writing surfaces were sloped such as early student desks with a lift top to storage. Not an urgent concern, but I am interested in knowing other's thoughts. Thanks!

I have used, collected, and repaired fountain pens for many years, collecting numerous ink stains in that time. My favorite first choice is Amodex ink and stain remover. It is available on-line directly from the company at https://www.amodexink.com/ or on Amazon. My experience has been positive with fountain pen inks, including Noodlers, India Ink, and McCaffery's ink. I have not specifically used it with Sumi or Moon Palace ink. Hope that helps.
