Workshops & Conference News / Re: European Lettering Institute (Belgium)
« on: December 15, 2016, 07:26:47 AM »
Hi @Estefa and @Rednaxela,

I emailed the school and, unfortunately, they told me that the Copperplate workshop (which is, in fact, for intermediate and advanced students) has been fully booked for quite some time already. There is even a waiting list and are afraid there won't be a possibility to eventually join in.  :(

For future reference, I told them that it would be nice to clearly state on their website when workshops are fully booked or show how many spots are still available. This, to prevent any disappointments. I'm pretty bummed about the lack of communication, so I'm just hoping they'll do something about it.

I also hope there will be new chances anytime soon! :)

@Estefa Eventhough the website states that it is oriented towards everyone, beginners and advanced, the signup form states that it is for intermediate and advanced students; those who are already familiar with (pointed pen) calligraphy. Just to be sure, I'll send them an email about this and will keep you updated!

@Rednaxela You're very welcome! I have a feeling the (traditional) calligraphy community in Europe is quite small/spread, so I just had to share this with you.
Also, very nice to see a fellow countryman around here. :)

Workshops & Conference News / European Lettering Institute (Belgium)
« on: December 12, 2016, 08:15:35 AM »
Hi everybody,

Recently I came across the website of the European Lettering Institute; a school that is all about lettering, calligraphy and typography. It is located in Brugge, a gorgeous city in Belgium.
They have a 3-4 year course and also offer short courses and workshops!

Here are several upcoming workshops:
  • Rachel Yallop (UK): Copperplate – A different look at the swelling line
    A 4-day workshop (February 4-5 and March 25-26 , 2017)
  • Immanuel Corbillon (Belgium): Lettercarving in stone
    A 2-day workshop (February 18 and March 18, 2017)

For more info, go to: https://letteringinstitute.com/workshops/

Personally, I am very interested in the Copperplate workshop and will be signing up soon. Since I live in the Netherlands, Belgium is not too far away for me.
However, I'm hoping that others (fellow Europeans?!) might be interested in joining the course as well and hopefully I'll see you there! :)

Tools & Supplies / Re: light box recommendations

I use the Huion A3 led light pad and love it so far.

Easy and comfortable to use, you can adjust the brightness, it's not too big nor too small and pretty affordable too.
I believe the US brandname is Monoprice.

Good luck with your search! :)

Hi!

Welcome to the forum! It's nice to see you're from Europe too (I live in the Netherlands). :)

I would also recommend sharing your practice here. Don't be shy, there are plenty of people who will give you feedback.
I've been a member here for only 2-3 months, but there's so many treasures in here; it is definitely worth your time to start digging this site.

Tools & Supplies / Re: walnut ink in the UK
« on: June 06, 2016, 06:40:35 AM »
HI Claire,
If you are interested in Walnut ink, the best UK option is to head to a hardware/wood dyes and paint store and buy Van Dyke crystals.

Andy from this forum will jump on to this soon enough and can probably tell you exactly where to buy it too. :)

He swears by it and from what he says, it is very cheap and gives a great brown colour.  I think they cost about £10-12 for a kilo of crystals.  You will need about 1 teaspoon full for 40 ml of ink  :)

Happy writing
-Prasad

Woah, I could never find walnut ink in the Netherlands, nor did I know that Van Dyke crystals are walnut crystals... These crystals are available here, so this works out great for me. Thanks for sharing!  ;D

Hi Sandy,

Nice to see you here too! I follow you on Instagram... As I have been learning engrosser's script for the past months and the fact that there aren't any people in my country (The Netherlands) who do the same, for as far as I know, there is no one around to give me feedback on my work. Glad I found this forum though!

If you are still looking for a partner, I'd be happy to join you. :)

Introductions / Hello from Rotterdam
« on: March 31, 2016, 07:54:09 AM »
Hi everyone! My name is Naomi and I live in The Netherlands. I have always been fond of handwriting, drawing and collecting notebooks. Whenever I am at the stationery or art supplies store, you'd have to pull me away if you want to get home in time for dinner. It's a shame that it's quite hard to find supplies for (pointed pen) calligraphy, though.

Last year I came across some flex fountain pens and I was sold immediately. They have opened the door to learning calligraphy, I might say. I have started learning calligraphy in January. It is so relaxing and soothing! Copperplate and Spencerian seem to be my preference so far (love the flourishes and neatness), but I am curious what else this calligraphy world has to offer! It has been a long time since I've been so excited about learning something new. My boyfriend even became interested in studying Fraktur, hehe. :)

The calligraphy and lettering community on Instagram have been truly inspiring and have led me here. Thank you, Erica, for letting me enter this forum! I look forward to learning more about calligraphy, meeting great people and get inspired.
