Yep, pretty normal. I love the way it writes as well but sometimes hesitate if I'm not in a ventilated room.

Ahhhh, Brad, I felt the same way when I got it! Now, I love the smell. Either it has changed or I equate it with practicing my calligraphy and have just gotten used to it.

LOL Brad! I love the smell of the one in the brown bottle and don't like the smell of the one in the green bottle!  :)

I used to practice Chinese calligraphy where we were taught to grind the ink from a stink and ink stone - and the Moon Palace Sumi (green bottle?) smells JUST like it. Brings me back to my childhood!

But I'm really big on smell so maybe I'm a weirdo - I also love the smell of Dr. Ph. Martin's Pen White and Bleedproof white. They smell like candy  ;D

I fully understand liking the smell. Kinda like the smell of fuel if your race motorcycles or cars or even aviation fuel.

The vapors of sumi ink make my eyes water and itch.  Go figure.

My cat enjoys drinking water used to rinse nibs with sumi ink.  She also enjoys contact lens solution and plant saucer water.  A taste the the mineral I think.

Ahh my cat loves drinking the sumi ink water too! I was thought she was just weird and wants to commit suicide by sumi poisoning or something.

LOL! My cat insists on drinking the walnut ink water! I looked it up to make sure he wasn't poisoning himself - highly toxic to dogs but not cats. In fact, there is even a cat litter made from walnut shells! However, mold that grows on walnuts can be toxic so I am sure to never leave the water sitting out when I'm done.

I kept it covered with a coaster while I lettered but he just kept knocking the coaster off to stick his paw in!  :)

I think we should just put our rinse water in a martini glass and be done with it.

Brad, I just opened my first jar yesterday and was overwhelmed by the noxious odor, too.  I'm highly sensitive to smell, so I don't think I can use it.  Not only that, but whomever initially poured the ink into my jar got it around the rim and it was dried shut.  Of course, as I wrenched it open ink spilled all over my hands and in the sink!  What an inky, stinky mess.   ::)  I transferred it into a baby food jar, which leaked all over my hands and in the sink today because the lid wasn't on just right!  I can't win with this stuff.  LOL!  Think I'll be trying walnut ink or Higgins next!
