Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Gift Ideas Using Calligraphy?
« on: December 05, 2014, 02:06:49 AM »
hello
I just joined calligraphy just few weeks ago.

I did this 2015 calendar for my mom,
add along with Jasmine Dowling Gifttag ( you can make your very own gift tag with dip pens, it ll be more meaningful)

Thing i used:
- 2015 calendar as guide
- dip pen
- black ink (i use fountain pen ink on this, but many people dont recommend)
- ruler
- paper cutter
-my diy calendar template (just to make sure the numbers are all well aligned)
-ribbons/ baker's twine for decoration

my other gift suggestion:
write motivational quotes and frame them up nicely!

would like to see other ideas too !!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: how to remove the rust?
« on: December 03, 2014, 08:12:08 AM »
Hi Suwen, are you in Malaysia? I'm in Singapore... since the humidity levels in our parts is 90%+ I think rust will continue to be a problem? I struggle with it too...

I read somewhere before that the best way to maintain your holder with metal parts is not to get it in contact with any liquids at all. This means being really careful and clean when you are dipping your nib into ink and therefore no need for cleaning.

I have two holders, one I managed to never touch any liquids... and one, I accidentally dunked into sumi ink while dipping my nib a while ago. I didn't think much of it, just cleaned it as best I could, left it to dry... and then overnight the metal parts turned bright orange! ARGH! (See picture, its a reddish brown rust now) I want to try what Andy recommended, buying replacement ferrules... so I pulled out the metal part to see what was inside. But looks like the rust is also all over the inner wooden barrel... which I haven't figured out how to clean.

I also wanted to show you my nibs... The brause ef66 nib is a week old (I refer to its 'age' from when it was prepped), I think I last used it 2 days ago and its already so corroded and you can see some rust formimg because I left it alone :( You know that movie with sandra bullocks (??) and the bomb strapped to the bus - they couldnt stop driving or the bomb would explode... it feels like that with my brause nibs! Once prepped, I can't put it down and have to keep using it until the end of its life or lose it to rusting!

In comparison I have a Nikko G which I don't like to use, but I picked it up to try every so often since I got it in August? And not one speck of rust... the other nibs in the picture are equally 'old' and no rust too.. which makes me think the problem of rusting depends on the type of metal and finish.

I wonder if anyone has experience replacing the metal part and how to do it... ?

And if anyone has experience with certain inks that don't corrode brause ef66 nibs too much?

hi Karena! Im from Malaysia!
now and then after i wash i try to put my dip pen holder near the window after wash so that the i can sunbathed them! i use vinegar and scrubbed using aluminium foil, as i can see the level of rust on your dip pen is quite bad.
i am not sure if it works, for mine, it remove quite a lot, i would not say 100% but looks much better!

i try to avoid the ink from the holder of my dip pen, but sometimes is just..LUCK, i would say. and also my clumsiness!

recently, i ordered few pcs of brause ef66 nib! hmm,now i kinda worry abt it will get rusted.

I don't know if this will work because I haven't tried it, but you could try soaking it in vinegar and then scrubbing with aluminum foil. If that doesn't work, try making a paste with baking soda.  :)

thank erica for the advice.
i choose to use vinegar and aluminium foil cause i have these at home! ;D
i dint soak vinegar for long, afraid it affect the wooden part of something, cause currently i only have this dip pen holder., which i adore so much.
i did see some improvement! although it didnt 100% but looks better than previous one!
Thanks! will try to use baking soda next time and update u!

Lemon juice will promote rust because of the acid.

I can't think of a way to remove it really, but a few drops of oil or (better) WD40 should stop it getting any worse.  Maybe leave it standing upright for a while then go round with an old nib until it's reasonably easy to push it into place.  It's possible to buy replacement ferrules which might be the best bet: Ebay is the obvious place to look but if all else fails Kallipos has them right at the bottom of this page.

Thanks andy for the advice.
im using the oil as prevention measure! i am using cooking oil  :P
is it nessesary to oil it evrytime i wash my holder?

I use a little bit of vinegar and aluminium foil as  to scrub the metal part of the holder.
I see some improvement! I dab some little oil on the metal aftr that using cotton bud.
Here is a pic of the metal ferrule.
Just the inner part i really unable to clean as i dont know to remove the ferrule.

Hello Suwen, your modern looks cute and on the right path and your italic looks promising.
Which books are you using to learn the italic?

hi scarlet, thanks for the compliment! is there any other way that i could improve more on my current writing? im sorry i dont have a calligraphy tutor, im learning this all by my own for almost 1 month already.
i bought modern calligraphy by molly.
recently i found out that my pointed nib (nikko G) keep catching on paper, even on vellum paper like rhodia. is it an indicate that i should change my nib. and usually what the shelf-life of a nib?

and for italic, curently im not refering to any books, im just trying my luck to get few exampler on broad pen calligraphy section. this is just my random writing using a leonard roundhand nib, the script is from one of our friend here, Ken Fraser, and im trying to practice with a leonard roundhand nib.

Brush Calligraphy / Re: trouble with letters in brush lettering
« on: November 12, 2014, 08:52:23 AM »
You seem to stop right before the turn of the brush going up so it was creating the point - take it slow and let the pressure of your hand and the brush do the trick so the curve is smooth. Kind of like using a pointed pen - pressure and release when you're about to do the upturn, and let the brush "snap" into a thin line.

I took a quick video, hope it helps: http://instagram.com/p/vSeOF1R7WB/

linda u did it very easily! will practise more!
thanks!
