Hi Suwen, are you in Malaysia? I'm in Singapore... since the humidity levels in our parts is 90%+ I think rust will continue to be a problem? I struggle with it too...
I read somewhere before that the best way to maintain your holder with metal parts is not to get it in contact with any liquids at all. This means being really careful and clean when you are dipping your nib into ink and therefore no need for cleaning.
I have two holders, one I managed to never touch any liquids... and one, I accidentally dunked into sumi ink while dipping my nib a while ago. I didn't think much of it, just cleaned it as best I could, left it to dry... and then overnight the metal parts turned bright orange! ARGH! (See picture, its a reddish brown rust now) I want to try what Andy recommended, buying replacement ferrules... so I pulled out the metal part to see what was inside. But looks like the rust is also all over the inner wooden barrel... which I haven't figured out how to clean.
I also wanted to show you my nibs... The brause ef66 nib is a week old (I refer to its 'age' from when it was prepped), I think I last used it 2 days ago and its already so corroded and you can see some rust formimg because I left it alone You know that movie with sandra bullocks (??) and the bomb strapped to the bus - they couldnt stop driving or the bomb would explode... it feels like that with my brause nibs! Once prepped, I can't put it down and have to keep using it until the end of its life or lose it to rusting!
In comparison I have a Nikko G which I don't like to use, but I picked it up to try every so often since I got it in August? And not one speck of rust... the other nibs in the picture are equally 'old' and no rust too.. which makes me think the problem of rusting depends on the type of metal and finish.
I wonder if anyone has experience replacing the metal part and how to do it... ?
And if anyone has experience with certain inks that don't corrode brause ef66 nibs too much?
I don't know if this will work because I haven't tried it, but you could try soaking it in vinegar and then scrubbing with aluminum foil. If that doesn't work, try making a paste with baking soda.
Lemon juice will promote rust because of the acid.
I can't think of a way to remove it really, but a few drops of oil or (better) WD40 should stop it getting any worse. Maybe leave it standing upright for a while then go round with an old nib until it's reasonably easy to push it into place. It's possible to buy replacement ferrules which might be the best bet: Ebay is the obvious place to look but if all else fails Kallipos has them right at the bottom of this page.
Hmm you can try lemon juice or brasso?
It's very pretty!
Hello Suwen, your modern looks cute and on the right path and your italic looks promising.
Which books are you using to learn the italic?
You seem to stop right before the turn of the brush going up so it was creating the point - take it slow and let the pressure of your hand and the brush do the trick so the curve is smooth. Kind of like using a pointed pen - pressure and release when you're about to do the upturn, and let the brush "snap" into a thin line.
I took a quick video, hope it helps: http://instagram.com/p/vSeOF1R7WB/
Brush lettering is not easy. Kudos to you!
