Whopperplate tool from days gone by
« on: July 03, 2014, 03:38:51 PM »
Just curious - has anyone seen or tried W.J. Hildebrandt" "Whopperplate"? It is used to demonstrate larger than life copperplate letters on paper, blackboard or any other surface./Users/harvey/Desktop/_4885.JPG. Sorry the image didn't show up, and I can't take another pic as I sold my remaining one just last week.

There was a short discussion about this while recently here. I've been considering attempting to build a makeshift one for fun.

I cant see the pic, but my calligraphy teacher back in Seattle used something she called a whopperplate to explain letter forms for us. It was great! Very helpful as a student to see the letters so large.

Hi Chantelle, that was the original idea. Of course the insides of the spread points had to be filled in. Then of course you could use it on large broadsides also. The usage was extremely large as long as the letters were large.
