I found this wonderful collection of old pictures of how children were taught to write. Almost like bird flourishes, right? ;)

Very imaginative!  But I think it would have confused me as a child....

Totally!! I still find them extremely confusing. But I remember when I took a japanese class in school, we also learned the hiragana with pictures. Some of them were very stupid.

I think it is helpful to use pictures and other devices to remember things, but the best one are the ones you invent yourself.  Those are the ones that you will remember most naturally.
