I am in search of an exemplar to learn flourished capitals with a broad pen.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you. Ive seen these before.  It was very difficult to reproduce with an edgded pen, constantly having to ride on its side corners.

I have to go Gothic dont i!

James,

Thank you.  I am a big fan of Bernardino Cataneo.  Love the rubrication of your calligraphic writings.  I have seen much of your Cancellarescha formata since I picked up italics.  I am very impressed.  It was partially your influence for me to be a big fan of B.C.  I am much torn between Tagliente and B.C.

I guess that I should not look further but to first improve what I have learned first.  Perhaps by year end, I would search for a Gothic capitals to add to my Chancery cursive.

Thank you for your time.

Inkysloth -- no swash for me.  I want something more fanciful .. Gothic!  I think, but I have not a clue as to how it will be played.  I think it was Arrighi said to master the minuscule first, Majuscule will come easier.  Thanks for the recommendation.

You're going proper fancy!

Have you looked at the cadel initials? They're incredible - I'm not brave enough to attempt them yet!

Do you have access to, or do own the following two books?

Three Classics of Italian Calligraphy (Arrighi, Tagliente, Palatino), by Oscar Ogg

Masters of the Italic Letter - Twenty-Two Exemplars from the Sixteenth Century,
by Kathryn A. Atkins

They contain an enormous number of flourished Italic Majuscules.

I do think Tagliente is one of the best flourishers of Italic Majuscules.

James,

Sadly, I have sought for the "Three Classics..." but have not success.  However, I have made myself familiar with the common masters (Arrighi, Tagliente, Mercator, Palatino, Beauchesne, Paladino, Reynold, Fairbank, and a few others)

As for "Masters of the Italic Letter..."  I will try my best to acquire a copy.

Thank you for the recommendations.

Inkysloth,

You have me at first hello!  Cadel... I think it was Tagliente's version that take the storm and in Beauchesne's "A Booke Containing Divers Sortes of Hands" featured on each page.  (Kinda make you think if all those commericals on the television have any effect on you... Silent advertisements.)  But I think my very first exposure was in the Declaration of Independence, Gothic!  And learning flourishes, it must have formed Cadel.

I will have to do more research on this... (BTW I am not a calligrapher by trade.) http://www.rocks4brains.com/~cat/cadel.pdf

Thanks Inkysloth

No apology needed on my behalf - recommendations of good calligraphy reference texts are always happily received!

James,

Sadly, I have sought for the "Three Classics..." but have not success ...............
I just bought a used copy from Amazon for $20 (because I can't remember who I lent my original copy too) -- there were several other copies available.
