Coffee & Nib-bles / Paper geekiness - natural grain of paper
« on: March 31, 2018, 06:42:55 PM »
This youtube video is from a mathematician and talks about how paper has a natural "grain" or structure as a result of the paper maker process.

He mentions that calligraphers have told him they can feel this grain.  With laid paper you can feel the texture imparted by the screens, but I'm less certain about being able to feel this internal structure with hot-press paper, though that might be just because I'm a beginner.

Nothing profound, but kinda fun to see how historic scribes sometimes incorporated flaws of parchment directly into their work.

This isn't actual calligraphy, but the writing is rather nice IMO and its definitely in an interesting example of written from back in the day

Tools & Supplies / Finding Kosher black ink
« on: November 30, 2016, 06:02:18 PM »
This might be a bit unusual of a question but, does anyone know of a source for kosher black ink?

From a one day workshop we had used kosher ink. It dried on the paper with a deep rich almost glossy black. It looks really nice.

I've done some searches online and even found a few recipes for making the ink (it looks like a specific type of iron gall ink.) I most certainly do not mean to be disrespectful or sacrilegious in any way.

My sister is having a beautiful Fall wedding, outdoors in the view of the mountains and we did a few quick signs for hot apple cider, coco, and coffee

I'm posting here in the copperplate forum, though my A, f, and p letters are modern and not allowed copperplate forms

I was trying for more legibility above proper script form

The Autumn leaves added a really nice touch IMO.
