Brad
Next question is, do you polish the inkwell or leave the tarnish on.

I like my stuff clean and shiny but the antique guys want the patina/tarnish to show the age of the item.

I have decided to put it on the shelf as is. I was going to put ink in it but  not sure if it could handle it because it just a pod and not designed for that. It is from the 1920's so I think I will leave it that way.

Does the entire top half screw off, to allow a bottle of ink to be placed inside? Might be part of a traveling set.

Yes the whole top screws off. I believe it is a part of Traveling set. It did not come with the bottle of ink unfortunately. I did not know or I don't think the dealer knew what it was and it was incomplete. I did not pay that much for it so apparently the ink bottle would add lots of value. At least what they are selling them on EBay.

How much would you pay for a glass inkwell with a brass cover (the kind that has a hinge to it)? I saw one in amber-colored glass and it was going at USD20. Should I get it?

If you like it, yes.

Sounds good to me. The shop also had a crystal ink well for $29. But it was square, no way could I have dipped my oblique in it.

Found this trinket box at an antique store :) thought it would be a great inkwell!  It had some red felt in it that I took out but it left remnants, so I'll have to figure out how to get it all cleaned out....and it's not airtight, so I may end using it just for storage of little things.

Mollyebelle,

Looks like it might hold some nibs.

I didn't get the inkwell in the end. Another salesperson quoted me a higher price and said it was a replica, not a vintage piece. :(

I went from page 2 to 6.  Those ink wells were stirring things in me!  I got the wants.

Hello everyone!

Long time no see, but I am planning to be more active from now on :* <3

On the subject, I found these two beautiful little jars. One has a cork top and a 50ml capacity and the other is 30ml and has a "regular" lid.
I am searching for something to store my walnut ink for everyday use (none of these are "calligraphy specific" so I probably have to use a brush anyways with them
Have you used an inkwell with a cork for everyday use? Did the ink have problems with it?
Should I go to a "calligraphy specific" inkwell?

Thank you in advance!

I’m not sure if this will help with the question about everyday use, but Fox and Quill sells their larger bottles of ink in Erlenmeyer beakers with cork stoppers.  I’ve had my bottle for a couple of years with no problem, but I do decant out of it to a smaller container.

@Erica McPhee @TeresaS Thank you a lot! I couldn't resist, and bought the one with the cork. If I doesn't work, I still can have it as a nice decoration  8) I will let you know how it goes!
I guess I have to look out for small evaporation or ink misbehavior?
