Excellent! Very informative! Thanks for posting. The only thing I'll possibly do different (and see if it does the trick) is to wash the nib or swish it around in some lacquer thinner and then hot soapy water to remove any leftover oils, rather than risk getting the fine tip too hot and brittle with a flame, which would be easy to do!

I would not dip them in too long Mark or the thinner may very well eat your nib or take off the layer over the metal which would make the nib unusable.

Thanks Amy! I don't use toothpaste anymore, but I was told not to use the gel-kind. I use rubbing alcohol to remove the oil.

In addition to dipping, an eyedropper or an artist's brush may be used to ink a nib. Have used a small bristle brush for years -- much evener fill than by dipping.

Hi Schin, good article! Am enjoying your work. Just join the Forum yesterday and wanted to inform you of my vintage nibs. I have probably one of the largest collections of vintage nibs in the country…all at reasonble prices. let me know your preferences and and I'll check my inventory for you. No order too small (or large).

Personal note to Schin: With your permission I am including your beautiful flower artwork on Brian's holders in my column of "Hints" to the Fort Worth and Dallas calligraphy Guild newsletters for May 2015. Hope you don't mind - I think your work is awesome - it takes his oblique holders up to another level. If this is not satisfactory with you let me know and I can delete this information.

Of course Harvey, it would be an honor! I am going to email you with high resolution photos of the pens, the ones on here are awfully small and won't reproduce well. I'm so glad you like them :)

Wonderful illustrative guide, Schin! I'm glad you also have my old stand-by, Mr. Potato on there, hehe. The potato also is useful to clean the nib when you have stubborn inks that dry on the nib.

Great job, thanks for sharing - Erica and Schin!  :D :D :D
