Thanks for your opinions! I think I'm going to try to improve it over time. But, I won't let it get me down. You all are the best!

Hi friends, you are always so helpful and I can't wait for the day when I can start giving advice rather than asking for it all the time.

Today's problem is that I can't stand the proper grip as displayed on the IAMPETH website by Dr. Vitolo. In fact, it become painful after just a few letters. The way you're supposed to rest your pinkie and ring finger nails on the paper just doesn't work. I rest the fingers gently and the side of my palm grazes the paper. I am trying to be serious about learning calligraphy and I don't want my grip to take me out of the running to be professional.

What is your grip like? What do you think of my inability to get a proper grip? As long as I am holding the pen at the proper angle am I okay?

Thank you!!!

Show & Tell / Re: Opinions needed please!

Leanda, I am a beginner in calligraphy. But, I agree with the others that it looks beautiful. I am far more seasoned in poetry, however. So, I just wanted to add that the big space is a great fit for an E.E. Cummings poem. He constantly experimented with spacing and line breaks in his poetry. It reminds me of the long pause before a poem is spoken. This is what you get for letting a poet (and wannabe calligrapher) into a calligraphy forum  ;)

Kind Critique / Copperplate inspired C
« on: May 20, 2015, 09:14:56 PM »
Sorry for the bad quality photo. I've been playing around with C in my practice today and wanted some feedback. Not necessarily going for copperplate, just copperplate-inspired C. Please give me some critiques!

Love it! I was starting to run into a bit of a practicing rut with my copperplate and this is giving my new inspiration!

Hi All!

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I prepared my nib by heating, but I think it might not have worked well enough because the ink doesn't seem to sit correctly on the well. Andy, I'll try the alcohol and see if it works. I also want to work on my dipping and try to lighten my hand. Thanks for the tip Elsa!

I'll see how these changes go. Thank you all for the help!

Sorry that my first post is asking for help but I don't know what I am doing wrong here! I tried cleaning my nib, holding it at different angles but no luck! Does anyone have a suggestion on how to avoid this blobs that happen mid-stroke and the nib dragging my ink around when I cross back through? Please look at the attachment.

Thank you to any and all!

Introductions / Hello from Hampton Roads, Virginia!

I'm Evelyn and I live in Norfolk, VA. I started somewhat seriously studying calligraphy about two months ago. Right now, I am learning copperplate and developing a feel for modern calligraphy. I would love to continue on to study spencerian soon. When I'm not getting ink all over the place, I work at a children't museum, read poetry and hang out with husband and our two mutts.
