Spencerian Script / Re: Practice white on black paper
« on: May 17, 2022, 10:41:27 PM »
Thanks Aries! Right?! I wish we could designate two hours a day as “calligraphy time.”
I fell in love with Spencerian at first sight. It’s always fun to go back to it. It’s so meditative!  :-*

Spencerian Script / Practice white on black paper
« on: May 17, 2022, 04:23:18 PM »
I have been brushing up on my Spencerian Script lately and I decided to do some white (Doc Martens Bleedproof White) on black paper. I like it because you can really see every line and can find any areas for improvement. These are all the places we have lived over the years or that have some significance to our family.  I could do this for days.  ;D

LOL @Ashley K  - I was thinking the same thing about dusting off my old rubber stamp collection. And then I remembered I gave the entire tub away to a friend when we moved last year. Which is why I never get rid of anything. I always want it later.  ;D

Introductions / Re: Greetings from Oregon!
« on: May 14, 2022, 02:38:44 PM »
 Hi Ashley,
Happy to see you post an introduction and say hello! Thank you for being a supporter for so long. I agree, being a calligrapher can be a lonely venture sometimes. In perspective, we are a relatively small group worldwide so it’s great when we can connect. Let us know if there is something  you are working on that you’d like feedback on or of course, any questions. We have been pretty quiet as of late as people tend to rotate around what social media platform they are on. I’m always open for more calligraphy talk!

P.S. I particularly liked the curve on the top part of the r in Dr. It gives a nice character.

I couldn’t resist and gave the second one a try. Could use a little work but it’s fun to try it. I am just in awe at how fine their hairlines are and the boldness of their shade.

Fascinating! Thank you @AnasaziWrites for that detailed explanation. I have a few boxes of some vintage nibs - Hunt 22, Hunt 56, and Esterbrook 356. You are right - you have to go through a few to get back up to speed on the nuances of the nib. I would rather not get invested in a nib that isn’t readily available. More often than not, I find myself going back to the trusty Zebra G anyway.  ;)

Great! Also, I found this gem yesterday. Schin Loong has done a YouTube video on how to write like Meghan Markel’s cursive. It’s for adults but it may help you find the nuances to assist in teaching.

Schin also has a fabulous Write Cursive with Me series for adults on YouTube.  ;D

Welcome!
When I was homeschooling two of my kids, I also was disappointed in what was available for cursive writing instruction and tracing. I found this one:
Click on her link for “Cursive Writing Worksheets” in the first paragraph. This style seems similar to Meghan’s traditional handwriting. Her “calligraphy” writing adds a sort of flourish to the tops of ascenders on letters like d and h.

We also liked this one, because you can
Create your own worksheets.

Eventually, we did Michael Sull’s American Cursive Handwriting but that was after they had developed some skill (and were much older).

Hope that helps! Good luck!
