Spencerian Script / Practice white on black paper
« on: May 17, 2022, 04:23:18 PM »
I have been brushing up on my Spencerian Script lately and I decided to do some white (Doc Martens Bleedproof White) on black paper. I like it because you can really see every line and can find any areas for improvement. These are all the places we have lived over the years or that have some significance to our family.  I could do this for days.  ;D

Stumbled across this magnificent piece which led me down the rabbit hole. This site is described as: Free access to all medieval and some modern manuscripts of Switzerland by means of a virtual library. You could spend days! They have not updated it to an SSL site yet. But there is an extensive collection. E-codices

ProCreate Calligraphy / ProCreate Calligraphy & Lettering!
« on: March 31, 2022, 08:59:07 PM »
I have been doing a lot of work on my ipad lately using the ProCreate app. This app is absolutely incredible and complete game changer for calligraphers and lettering artists. I am taking a few lettering classes and have been practicing my Spencerian and vaguely Madarasz script  ;D using the ipad pencil. Anyone else? I would love to see what others are doing.

Show & Tell / Love One Another exchange 2022
« on: February 28, 2022, 11:45:49 AM »
It’s been so quiet! Hopefully it’s because everyone is busy, busy doing calligraphy.  ;D
I thought I would share my exchange from Valentine’s Day. I found these lovely menus at a local shop and just knew I had to put calligraphy on them. I did the watercolor first, then the lettering, and finally added a bit of silver leaf. I did one original and then printed the finals. I added the silver leaf after printing.
The envelopes were a challenge - first finding the right size for the menus (thank you JAM paper via Amazon). I love the texture and feel of vellum envelopes! But these buggers would not take ink well. I originally wanted to use gold ink but it just beaded up and I am allergic to sandarac powder so I resorted to markers. Fun though!
I felt it needed a little brightness so I added the watercolor flowers after doing the addresses.
Would love to see if anyone else wants to share theirs.  :-*

I was sent this interesting information from Stationery Trends regarding a postal reform bill which has passed the House and is now with the Senate.

Favorite Resources / Molly Suber Thorpe's iPad Lettering Tools
« on: December 28, 2021, 10:39:22 AM »
If you are interested in doing calligraphy on the ipad, Molly Suber Thorpe's Lettering Tool Kit is a great way to get started and a fabulous learning resource. Molly offers a ton of incredible freebies and practice worksheets once you sign up for her free newsletter. Highly recommend! She recently had 24 free downloads leading up to Christmas. Amazing!

I did this a few years ago on Instagram and it was really fun. I posted a bunch of Copperplate and Spencerian capitals behind a “door” image each day until Christmas. Instead of posting a bunch of pictures, I am going to post one with all the variants on it, each day until Christmas. Feel free to comment or add some variants.

These are capitals I am playing around with in ProCreate on the ipad and will some day translate to pen and ink if possible. I love ProCreate for the free flowing pen tool and ability to redo as many times as I need without wasting paper or ink. It doesn’t always translate to pen and ink later because of the pressure and directions I go, but still a useful exercise.  :)

Hope it inspires you to play and create your own!  :-*

If you click on the photo, you can see a higher res version and each letter up close.

Remember that as you study Engrosser’s Script (Copperplate), you will see a wide variance in the height of ascenders, sometimes even from the same penman. While there are “rules” per se, personal preference plays a large part. In the samples below, I demonstrate these variances. The guidelines I have created indicate the d, t, and p are all at the same height. This is both based on exemplars from old texts as well as creating a simple starting point for beginners. It is not set in stone so please adjust according to your preference.

2021 Exchanges / Pop Up Exchange Share
« on: September 26, 2021, 12:54:27 PM »
This was such a fun exchange! I adapted a teacup tutorial for the inkwell: Pattern on Etsy. The found the tutorial via YouTube: Kagisippo on YouTube It was quite intricate but I really enjoyed the process.

The envelopes were addressed using new techniques I am learning in Anne Elser's Flora on Point class. If you get an opportunity to take this class and want to stretch your creativity, I highly recommend it.

I have received so many great exchanges, too!  :-*
