My ultimate go-to book for learning flourishing basics was Bill Hildebrandt's 'Calligraphic Flourishing'. If you Google it, you will be able to find a pdf. I'd post here, but I'm not sure the action would be in line with FF rules, so I'm playing it safe. In a nutshell, the three golden rules are: 1) Intersect lines as close to perpendicular as possible; 2) parallel lines and ovals are best; 3) never cross a shade with a shade. Hope this helps!

Thanks @Starlee! You are correct - although Bill Hildebrandt has passed away, his book is still under copyright law.
@Ken Fraser - AMAZING post! And your examplars are incredible (as always!). ;D (In fairness to other forums, I do prefer members post their topics within Flourish and not link to another forum. But this is a nice exception. :) )
@Angelica acosta This is a great link as well to a FB post including many well known calligraphers' ideas about Flourishing: Flourishing How To's & Advice (http://theflourishforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=408.0[url=http://Flourishing How To's & Advice)
