Years ago my husband was in Sydney and brought some wonderful calligraphic supplies back for me (at my request) from Wills Quills.  Have just googled them and everything is discounted at the moment to celebrate their new websites launch.    :)

lol...Isn't that something!  The girls DO look like sisters, and the photo pose is just so similar!  Love the glasses, very cute!  Are the girls the same age?

Introductions / Re: Bonjour! Hello from France by an engraver
« on: March 27, 2014, 04:11:47 AM »
My great grandfather immigrated to Canada from France. He made a beautiful hand lettered prayer book which has been handed down to me.  I feel so fortunate to have this in my possession...but I do feel sad that I never learned the language.  The book is a real family treasure. Anyways this thread made me think about that.

I have been meaning to photograph some of the pages for this forum as his prayer book is beautiful and would have been a labour of love with the very tiny writing and flourished borders... and I can think of no better place to post images of his work than here where the love of lettering flourishes. Without knowing him, I think if he were alive today, he would approve!

Anyways Jean, like the others, I welcome you to the forum.  I haven't anywhere near the skill of so many on here, but I am a great admirer!  I look forward to seeing more of your work!  I, too, LOVE the gorgeous holders you made!  Coming from NZ, I did notice the Maori influence. :)   The engraving is superb.

I know, I keep thinking of the passengers, crew, and families.  I pray that SOMETHING is found and wouldn't it just be wonderful if the passengers were still alive and could be brought back to their families.

Yes, the handling of this has been highly criticized...but it's hard to know what has actually been going on behind the scenes.  I imagine there is a lot of information to process before putting anything out in the public arena.

My thoughts are certainly with everyone involved.

Wowwwwww....how did I miss this Linda?  Am so glad I have stumbled across it now!  If it were on my fridge I would not want the year to end cause I wouldn't want to take it down!  It's so pretty...great lively fresh colours and your lettering is perfect.

Kind Critique / Re: Birthday Card and Envelope

Such Beautiful work Lori!

I love how you have done the name on the envelope, it's very cute and personally, I don't see any problem with the connectors...it is maybe just a little hesitant on the end stroke but that will get better with practice.

Your card is very sweet...such a pretty blue with the white lettering...I think you've done a lovely job on the lettering and the flourishing is pretty, reminds me of a cloud :) I know what you mean about the repetitiveness, but I think you've made this work.

I tend to not do too many flourishes as I'm just not all that comfortable with them yet ... I'm still working on capital letters and after that I will focus on flourishing...but I do think you are right about learning and practising many so you can fit them in and adapt where needed.  I think looking at work you admire and practising that helps train the eye.

I agree, the envelope doesn't go with the card ... personally I think it would be better to stick to similar styles on both...BUT that said, I think it's great to try out different lettering styles and have fun with it! I don't know that there are any hard and fast rules about it really.

I made a commitment to myself this year that I would mail any work that I made with love for somebody even if I could see issues with it ... there was a time when I would do things over sooooo many times to try and get it perfect that in the end I didn't send it!  Crazy eh.

The recipient of your card will no doubt be thrilled to receive such a beautiful thing in her letterbox, I know I would be!

Lol Nickki!  We all have days like that and I totally agree...don't even bother opening the ink bottle!  At least you can see the funny side of it now!

It's kind of like our tools become an extension of us ... like the scratchy nib with the scratchy mood!
When you stop and think about it, it's interesting ... calligraphy is like a meditation and when the mind wanders and is unsettled it shows up in our work.

I'm glad your day is better now...sometimes a cup of tea and a good book or a walk around the block are better choices when feeling agitated!

Give yourself a pat on the back...you are awesome!
