Today, The Atlantic published, "A Modern Guide to the Love Letter," just in time for Valentine's Day:

I'd tell you what you missed, but unfortunately, the live stream didn't work for me. I missed it as well  :(

Creativelive does re-run their classes, so I'm hoping to catch it later.

By the way, I found a link to Bianca's personal site, which has more samples of her calligraphy: http://www.biancamascorro.com/.

Thanks Linda for the IG link!

For those interested, this week, creativebug.com released the first in a series of 4 beginner calligraphy videos with Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls:

I watched the first video lesson, and the quality of the video is quite good. There's a PDF with an exemplar of her upper case alphabet.

Workshops & Conference News / Re: National Stationery Show - NYC
« on: January 30, 2015, 06:17:04 PM »
A few years ago, a friend and I went as attendees, not vendors. It was overwhelming, but in a good way.

We spent only a day on the floor, but we could easily have spent two full days at the show. I'm not sure we saw even half the booths during our day there. We chatted with a number of vendors who were generous to two graphic design students with their giveaways.  :)

If you're going as a vendor, you may want to search for "national stationery show booth" for articles/blog posts from vendors who share their previous experience. Also, there's a Flickr stream devoted to exhibition booths if you're looking for ideas.

Good luck!

Introductions / Re: Hello from Boston!

Welcome Maggie!

I'm a fellow calligrapher from the Boston area (Metrowest), and like you, I'm a beginner.

A similar question was asked in the I still love calligraphy Facebook group. Recommendations included keeping a light grip on your pen, touching the pen to the paper lightly, forming letters with your arm rather than your fingers, going slowly, and as you already know, warming up and practicing.

I've been trying to improve my calligraphy by slowing down. I find that I want to write with a dip pen just as I would with a pencil or ballpoint pen, and the results are a bit sloppy  :(

Hi everyone,

I just came across this tool for addressing envelopes:

I haven't bought one for myself, but it looks useful.

Thanks so much for sharing your story, Joi!

It's really inspiring to hear your journey, especially for someone like myself who only picked up a pointed pen in September. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought you were writing calligraphy for years.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Re: Self Taught vs. Classes

I would also be interested in knowing how much time people spend practicing to get so good. It is inspiring and gives me hope to see how dramatically people have improved in a single year, but I'm wondering if you practice hours and daily, etc.

I'm a newbie, but I practice anywhere from five to seven days a week spending one to six hours a day.

I'd love to know how many people in the forum are self-taught and how many have taken classes either in person or online.

I've taken two, short in-person classes and Melissa Esplin's I still love calligraphy online course. Despite practicing regularly, I'm worried that without formal training, I can't identify mistakes and areas of weakness. Rather than improving with practice, maybe I'm just making better mistakes  :-\

I think I first heard of the forum from Melissa Esplin's I still love calligraphy class.
