Tools & Supplies / Re: Advice & Ideas Requested

I think this is a supply and demand situation. As long as there are people out there paying the money you should sell them for the going rate. Donate the money you make beyond your investment to a worthy cause and maybe help some people in real need.

Show & Tell / Re: Finally got my photography lights set up

Personal opinion is that in today's time Macro lenses are not as necessary anymore unless you want the truly shallow depth of field. Cropping is the name of the game with today's high megapixel detectors. The post from AnasaziWrites is a good example. Both of the images posted are just around one Megapixel each. These were probably downsampled from a larger pixelcount file taken with a Macro but you can get the same result cropping a 5% area of a 20 Megapixel detector as long as you are using the images for web posting and not poster printing.

Just my two cents.
Depth of field is related to the aperture in combination with the focal length. Exposure time is only the result of a given aperture and ISO setting and has no impact on depth of field.
If you want very small depth of field you would choose a very wide open aperture such as f1.8 in your case, if you want very large depth of field choose something like f22. If you get a problem at f1.8 that your shots are overexposed reduce your ISO setting to the lowest available setting or reduce the intensity of the light in your light-box set-up.
Not sure about the Sony's but you should be able to set it to ISO 50 or even lower.
Running your camera on full manual is a good idea for shots like these so that you get around the camera brain trying to outsmart you.

I am going to spend the next week and a half in San Francisco (business travel) and will be right around Union Square. Any good calligraphy related stores to check out?

Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words.

Here is the second piece based on instructions (just not as nice) from Lindsey at "The Postman's Knock" https://thepostmansknock.com/calligraphy-ampersand-art-tutorial/

I hope it is ok to post that here.

Right now still on copy paper with a few areas to be fixed before I write it on the real paper, one week to go.

Not sure about this one. Too early, quality too low yet? Only been married for 23 years, one has to be careful. I can wait for another year and hopefully be better, but then there is the whole selfmade present thing....there are a few other pieces to go with it but I doubt I will get much better in a week.

PS: I know there is supposed to be an 's at the end (forgot in all the excitement), I will re-write it but it wont improve much I think.

Interesting article.

To answer your question, A&C Black was the publishing house who owned Encyclopedia Britannica at the time. From what I see Adam is the Dad and Charles is his son.

Seventh Edition  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_Britannica#A._and_C._Black_editions_.287th.E2.80.939th.2C_1827.E2.80.931901.29

I didn't know this, just Googled it.
