The Library / An Elegant Hand by William E. Henning
« on: April 03, 2017, 10:45:46 AM »
This book was recommended by Phyllis Maculuso in her envelope class.  It is an amazing book not only full of examples, exemplars, and reproductions from some of the greats in American Penmanship but also a book that tells their stories.  This book covers the lives of Platt Rogers Spencer, George A. Gaskell, Louis Madarasz, William E. Dennis, Austin Norman Palmer, Francis B. Courtney and William C. Henning.  It was written by William C. Henning's son, who unfortunately died before it was published.  You can tell that the book was a labor of love.  I highly recommend this book - it is almost $60.00 on Amazon - but it is worth every penny and then some.

« on: March 31, 2017, 11:58:53 PM »
I just found out which classes I'm enrolled in, and I was able to get my first choices.  2 1/2 days with Harvest Crittenden learning gilding and 2 1/2 days with Carol DuBosch learning folded pen.  I am excited.  June cannot get here quick enough.

Are any other Flourish members going?

OMG!!  So I got a different lot of 140 nibs for $20.00 and now I have an even dozen of the Principality and 15 Spencerian 1s, and other misc nibs for me to play with.  I told my husband to go buy lottery tickets and I wasn't even joking.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / You won't believe this!
« on: March 24, 2017, 01:13:23 PM »
So, I was cruising ebay last week and saw this listing for a bunch of inks and some nibs.   The nibs were in envelopes so you couldn't see what or how many nibs there were.  On one envelope all it said was Shading Pens, one of the others said Med Flex, and the last one just said Pen Points - but i could see on the last one where she had written Hunt 22 and Tamblyn EZ.  I decided to take a risk and emailed them if they would do a Buy Now for 30.00 and they agreed.  It arrived today.   In the Shading Pens envelope was 11 count them 11 Gillott Principalities.  I am still shaking.  There was also one Hunt 22 and 1 Tamblyn EZ in addition to som Esterbrook and Mitchell pens.  I am in shock!!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Antique Fountain Pen
« on: February 24, 2017, 04:55:45 PM »
Can anyone tell me anything about this pen?   My daughter gave it to me for Christmas - she bought it at an antique shop.  Supposedly it is hand painted - there are no markings on the pen itself.  The nib says Perfect Point Diadeum and on the clip of the lid it says New Clip.   It is a very large pen.  Here are two pictures.  Any info would be appreciated.   Thanks in advance.

Kind Critique / Spencerian and Copperplate Practice
« on: February 18, 2017, 11:38:49 AM »
Here is this mornings practice sheet of both Spencerian and Copperplate.   I need to work on my capital stems and the letter D (one of my least favorite letters to write) but my slant is getting better.  Any and all feedback is wanted and appreciated.  Thank you for all the others that put their work out there - you have given me the courage to do the same.

Show & Tell / St Francis Prayer
« on: February 16, 2017, 10:46:33 AM »
Here is a St Francis Prayer I did for a friend in broad edge calligraphy.   I haven't had any formal training so I am not even sure what style you would call it - but I think it turned out rather nicely.  Broad edge, especially Uncial and Italic is on my list of hands to learn.  Any and all comments and critiques are welcome.

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Letter Works / IAMPETH
« on: February 12, 2017, 08:54:00 PM »
I registered for Letter Works and am very excited to get to go.  I am not able to go to both this year..... but in planning for my training budget for next year, what are the main differences between the International Conference and IAMPETH?  Is one "better" than the other?

Tools & Supplies / Antique Inkwell
« on: December 11, 2015, 07:50:36 PM »
Can anyone tell me if I need a liner in this or can I put ink in it as is?   I have been using it as a glorified paperweight because I have been afraid of messing it up.  Any and all help is appreciated.
