… I am impatient (let's say I 'was").  Well, I'm getting back in the saddle and I figured what better place to come for validation vs judgment…

Oh, you’ve got a lot of validation from me, dear soul!  Though now an official senior citizen, there is an internal part of me I call “I Want It Now” that has tormented me from youth. “It” has usually meant musical, calligraphic or any other creative skill.  And it has often caused needless frustration or giving up. No judgment here!

Several years ago I read Carol Dweck’s most excellent book, “Mindset:  The New Psychology of Success” to which I attribute having stuck with learning and practicing Spencerian script now for three and a half years. Don’t misunderstand me, I don’t “have it” yet, but the old me would’ve given up after a month.

Wishing you joys and inspiration with your upcoming classes!

Love, love it.  Everything you have stated.  Gonna snap the photo for my journal(s).  [One of the reasons I wanted to learn some type of calligraphy.   To have beautiful writing in my journal(s)].  Looks also like I need to read that book.

You're a gem, Zivio, rock on!  Or rather, Write on!    ;D

Tools & Supplies / Re: Curv-E Holder - New Oblique Pen Holder
« on: April 10, 2024, 11:19:49 AM »

Quote
Personally, I do not think the average oblique holder is well adapted to script writing unless the top side is flattened so the forefinger can rest upon both the holder and the tin at the same time, thus overcoming the tendency to grip or turn. The triangular oblique holder is well adapted to engrossing script.

I have learned through experience that the nearer the point of the pen is grasped, the better control of the pen is the result. In writing Engraver’s script, I place my forefinger on the pen below the side piece of the oblique holder about half an inch from the point of the pen, which results in perfect control of my pen.

So I contacted Edward Curran @Edward , one of my favorite pen makers and told him I wanted a curvilateral pen - a somewhat triangular shape but with rounded edges for better comfort, a flat top, and a shallow bottom. I sent him some sketches and photographs of a model I made out of paper clay. After a few trials, Edward created what I think is the perfect holder for Copperplate, and especially flourished Copperplate.

We call it the Curv-E Holder - representing its curvilateral shape, Curran, and E for Erica and Edward.  ;D

I have been using it now for many months and will most likely never go back to a round holder. It allows a natural, comfortable tripod grip which helps me execute both muscular and whole arm movement - both of which facilitate better flourishing. I can glide my hand on either the side of my little finger or the finger nail, whichever feels more comfortable.

I'm sharing some photos below. Would love to hear your thoughts.  ;D

Those pens are GOOORGEOUS, Ms. Erica.  When I finally was able to order one, though lovely, it is not gooorgeous.  I was simply glad to get one in my hand.  Hmmm, I wonder if I would be able to find really pretty ones at this time?  8)

Lordy I've been gone since forever.  Book, I read something here about a book from Ms. Erica.  Really??!!!  You go girl!  I've got to find it.

Meanwhile last night I dusted off my Curve-E, cleaned the Nikko G and I am ready to go for class on Monday.

Now to read through this entire thread.  Perhaps it will shed more on Erica's book and the creator of my pen, Mr. E.   ;D ;D

Two years down the road and now about to begin Younghae's Spencerian online course.

The difference:  admitted impatience on my part in dealing with ANY script.

Plan:  Exercise patience.  I get older each day whether or not I practice.  So, I am going to practice and be mindful at learning Spencerian which I believe will address my everyday hand wishes.

So glad the Forum is alive and well.

Here I go again.  Know what, I ain't apologizing.  I still love calligraphy.

Yes, I am impatient (let's say I 'was").  Well, I'm getting back in the saddle and I figured what better place to come for validation vs judgment.

I am not old (a seenya sitizen) and I learned I was impatient with myself and the process.  SO, I come to SS armed with that knowledge and wanting to wield a new-found, self-imposed patience (that's my self talk and I'm sticking to it).

I lined up all needed supplies from my stash and looked at it all so proudly.  I have a dinky thingy with dried Sumi.  You should have seen me proudly cleaning it out last night, LOL.

Yeah, so I am ready and I am back to read and stay in the zone here.

So glad you all are still here.

Cheers,

L

2022 Exchanges / Re: Wish You Were Here Exchange Sign Ups are Now Closed.

Thank you for the lovely destinations that you shared.  I am sitting here re-looking at my exchange pieces.  Had to stop, smell the roses, and acknowledge those that shared a card.  I wanted to thank you all individually alas I can not locate the list that was emailed to us.

I think, Michael, yours was the one with exquisite (Spencerian ??)  It is so delicate I almost feel I should not touch it.  Beyond lovely!  Is that you behind the turtle?

I really need to think of a way to display these gems to enjoy going forward vs filing them away in a box or something.

I may switch to uncial.   Our friend here, Jean Wilson, stated it might be easier for me to pick up.

I tried a practice with All the Best and it is so pretty (on my Rhodia paper).  Will be glad when I get good at italics so it can really look pretty.  The Diamine is in the second photo, about middle of the page the diagonal lines.  I was using Pilot Parallel pen 3.8 with a cartridge so I had to switch to a pen with no cartridge inside.

Boy the dipping is sure different than with the cartridge.  I think for practice I like having the cartridge.  I have enough going on to think about without adding dipping a pen every few seconds.

Broad Edge Pen Calligraphy / Guideline Generator
« on: August 20, 2022, 06:28:24 PM »
Do any of you know the website where guidelines may be generated?  I used it daily when I was attempting to learn copperplate and now for the life of me I can NOT remember the site and I don't think I have it bookmarked.  I have Googled and many were listed except the one I want/like.  It was made by a woman, I do remember that.  The name of the site does NOT indicate what the site is (which doesn't help me remember).  Ugghhh, this is so frustrating.  The day I decide to sit down and practice now I can't remember my guideline site.

I have recommended it to others dozens of times too.   :o  No longer on Instagram I can't go there and find it readily.  Ughhh.

Hey, Inkventors - Diamine announced the Inkvent collection for 2022 "The Green Edition" at the beginning of this month (August 2021), but I haven't had time to post about it until now.  It's available for pre-release purchase at the usual outlets.  Have I already pre-ordered mine?  Yes. Yes I have!

@Lyric did you ever get around to using the "All the Best" (2021) that you finally bought?  I'd love to see what you've done with it!

--yours, K

Umm, what had happened wuz . . .!  This beautiful bottle and ink is no less than 24" from me EVERY SINGLE DAY.  No, I have not used it.  Oh, I pick up the bottle, finger it, shake it to disperse the sheen particles, then place in back in its spot.  I have no excuses; none.  Now, over COVID (hopefully) no excuses.  Ughhhhh.
