Class Description
 
Lettering artists will be introduced to the skills and tricks needed to successfully letter on an assortment of unique surfaces using the pointed pen. Have you ever wondered how to write on a rose petal, sand dollar, agate, or a leaf. Carla will work with students through a series of projects where they will learn about the inks, pens, and tricks necessary to easily letter on these advanced surfaces.
 
Students will learn hand on techniques for lettering on agate, sand dollars, wood, fondant, and various organic surfaces
 
 
Equipment Required
 
All supplies will be provided. Experienced lettering artists should bring with them their favorite pointed pen and an assortment of unused nibs.

Announcing the 2019 / 2020 Introduction to Engraving  and Writing on Weird Stuff Workshops

Description
The engraving workshop is designed to teach the lettering artist the skills necessary to translate their unique hand from pen and paper to drill and glass. Students are expected to have a familiarity with common letterforms and be able to write them proficiently before class begins.

Engraving students will learn to engrave on glass, metal, agate, and other surfaces using a quiet, low speed, low vibration, rechargeable drill. By the end of the day, students will possess the basic skills needed to start producing produce beautiful artwork and personalized merchandise.

Your skills will quickly transform as you use your newfound writing instrument to translate your writing style from paper to glass. Under the skilled hand of calligrapher and engraver, Carla Hagan, students will learn how to operate, hold and manipulate the drill to create the thicks and thins of traditional letterforms using the drill.

Students who complete this class will have the skills necessary to begin personalizing gifts and begin working on site events that often earn in excess of $100 per hour.

Carla Hagan is a professional Calligrapher based in West Palm Beach, Florida. With over 14 years of professional calligraphy experience, four years ago Carla jumped into the engraving scene. With a few months of practice, she was able to learn how to transform her calligraphy hand to glass engraving. Carla has built a vast network of engraving clients including Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Glenlivet, Chivas Regal, Josh Wines, Redemption, Cartier, Louboutin and Chanel to name some of them. She also is hired to engrave at on-site corporate and wedding events.

 
Curriculum
This curriculum features an intensive, hands-on approach to learning.

Carla will share her knowledge of the most effective engraving tools and supplies and of course safety.

Then we will get right into the basics of glass engraving, getting comfortable with the operation of the micro motor and drill, burr rotation and the different burrs to available to use.

Next, we will get into engraving design and be working on bottles of various shapes and sizes. Then, of course, engraving while writing on a curved surface. Carla will be sharing how to avoid mistakes and when necessary, how to “fix’ mishaps.
By the end of this class, you will be comfortable enough to make beautiful, personalized gifts and expand your business by offering engraving along with calligraphy services.

Safety goggles or glasses
Glass samples
