Do you change the orientation of the paper or pen in doing this exercise?[/quote]

The pen and paper are kept in the same positions throughout, with the nib pointing at the stroke direction so that the tines splay evenly when pressure is applied.

Actually, this exercise is easier to execute, and probably just as useful, if written at one of the usual slope angles.

Some time ago, I devised these abstract shape as vehicles for practicing flex nib usage and control of shade width etc.
They may be of interest, here.

I have been MIA from this forum for quite some time, but boy, the information and resources that everyone shares is just tremendous! Thank you Ken for sharing these practice strokes, will definitely try them out!

Thanks for all these wonderful resources/practice strokes!  This is a great thread as I'm still struggling with making flourishing feel natural.   Flourishing does require a different kind of practicing than letter forms, and takes a bit getting used to feel comfortable with it.

I thought I'd throw out another way to look for ideas:  try just doing a basic search in Google books on "calligraphy flourishing".  Google will then have some good previews of books that you can "flip" through for some ideas/tips.  :)

Ken- I tried to go to your web site to possibly order your book that was mentioned, but the only thing that comes up is your home page. I am on an iPad right now, does that make a difference? Thanks - BTW- LOVE your work!

Ya Torrie I took it down because I am sure it violated the rules of this forum. I was not thinking of that when I posted. I just wanted to help my fellow flourishors. Looks like Joi helped you out though. If not let me me know.

Hey! What is the name of the said book? TIA!
