Name layout and design project
« on: January 01, 2015, 11:56:30 AM »
Thanks Erica for creating this topic thread. I will be the guinea pig and go first.

My friend has asked me to make a 4x6 card which has her friend's name on it and the meaning of her name. She intends to frame the card. I want to combine two alphabet/letter styles: unical and copperplate. I am a beginner with both. I am a beginner with all things artistic. :)

I have attached a scan of my layout on a grid paper. The bottom design is where I want to head. I've attempted to be more modern with my copperplate and find that awkward, but I think I can make that work with some more practice.

As for inks, I was going to use a parallel pen with a combo of Pearl Ex inks for the unical letters. And  black sumi ink for the copperplate.

I need suggestions for paper. White? Ivory? Color? Use watercolors to wash the paper first? I have Strathmore cold press watercolor paper and various kinds of cardstock.

Embellishments - do I fill in any of the white space?  I have no experience with flourishing. I have no drawing training other than Zentangle.
Could I try some simple watercolor flowers or marks?

So please offer suggestions:
spacing
size of letters
layout
color choices
paper choices
embellishments
and any other helpful tips.

Thanks in advance for being my teachers. I am grateful.
Kim

following the suggestions on the PDF, you have two elements, so you might want a third.
and, you might want to increase the contrast
make anne larger and full of grace smaller
i think it would look fine if the two elements were centered
then - you could make the flourish on the g swing down below the anne
which would give you your third element.

this pin on pinterest shows gold detail on top of walnut ink, done by jane farr

i tried to attach another one by jane with the name sue.
i hope it shows up.

if you made the uncial anne using walnut ink, you could add some details
and full of grace could be in gold
it would be lovely on white or ecru paper

if you have never flourished
it would look fine to have the name centered, large
and the full of grace - small, centered underneath
and then don't worry about a third element

although, if you do a search for *flourish* on pinterest
you will see many examples that are pretty easy.
with a centered layout, you could add a fine line and a small flourish above the name
as your third element

i'm not sure you want to capitalize grace - that makes it look like a name
rather than a noun

my 2-cents
jean

One thing that I've learned with mixing of scripts is to create good contrast between the leaning angle of the two different scripts.

In your case, Uncial is a vertical script. There is pen tilt, but not character slant. Copperplate, on the other hand tends to be set on a 30 degree forward lean.

Now, I'm not sure if there's a reason NOT to do this (maybe someone can give examples of where letterforms would lose legibility on '(' strokes - like the miniscule X.), but I'd suggest leaning the Copperplate even further so that you're farther away from the vertical similarity of the Uncial. Maybe even as far as 45-55 degrees. This exaggerated difference in the rhythm of the two scripts could create more contrast, and make the piece more interesting without needing to fill the white space on the card.

As far as flourishing goes: the better you can do it, the less of it you have to do.

On color: GOLD! duh. ;)
