Gorgeous pen & really gorgeous lettering!

I never remove my nibs until they are worn out & unusable. And, I have some gorgeous, wonderful oblique nib holders, some made by experts here at the Forum.  Do I use them?  No, unless Iím showing off! 😃. My go-to, everyday choice is a little black plastic Speedball holder!!  Why?  Itís what I used when learning Copperplate/Engrosserís script!  It just ďfeels rightĒ in my hand!  Why are calligraphers such creatures of habit??

I donít know what yíall use to insert & remove the nibs in your oblique holders. - I have some little jewelry making pliers that I got at a craft store.  Iíve used them for more than a decade & theyíre just like new!  But, I use Brause ef66 nibs 95% of the time& they are tiny & delicate. I think they can easily be damaged. So, I tend to leave them in the holder.

When I am traveling with a nib in an oblique holder, I put a small piece of a plastic drinking straw over the nib.  That works great to protect the nib!

@Bianca M:  Youíre KILLING me!  You really are!! I believe (Iím making this up, but Iím pretty sure that Iím right!) that you are the one who introduced me to the joys of Pearl-Ex in the first place!).   Then, Joi went on her tear & tried them all, so we lazy folks could blow off the few that donít work.  It completely & permanently changed my little calligraphy life!!  Now, youíre telling me about another life-altering technique that Iím going to stop EVERYTHING and go to the craft store & buy MORE craft supplies, which I need like a hole in my head!!  Sigh!  What I really mean, deep down, is ďThank You!Ē  Itís so great to have smart experts like you to help those of us who are just trying to navigate along in your generous wake! 😃

p.s.,

If we ever end up somewhere like IAMPETH, Iím buying you dinner!

@Ken Fraser:  I *think* you gifted me the DVD because I sent you a ďcare packageí of something.  Maybe Pearl-Ex??  I think it was something that was readily available to me, but hard for you to acquire.  Iím lucky in that I live in a rural area, but I have the biggest Hobby Lobby store in their system of stores. - Art supplies?  Iíve got access to LOTS!! 😃. Thank you, again, for the DVD!  I treasure it!

@Mark T:  Ken does, indeed, have a ďmemoirĒ.  - I have a DVD that chronicles his work & many accompaniments!  I believe that he may still have some to sell.  I treasure mine!  Itís a treasure-trove of fabulous calligraphy!  He is a genius!  (Iím a big fan, as you likely can tell!)

@Ken Fraser:  I am an auditory learner.  I canít ďturn offĒ sounds, even extraneous sounds not directed towards me.  As a result, I always letter in silence.  I find that if I write when vocal music is audible, the lyrics become part of the text that Iím working on.  EEK!  No one wants the lyrics of Aretha Franklinís ďRespectĒ in their certificate of achievement, or whatever is being penned!  😃

When I first started on my calligraphy journey, I didnít know what I was doing. I ordered Noodlers ink because it was reasonably cheap.  If Iím just practicing, itís my go-to ink!  I love it, even though itís supposed to be for fountain pens.

Spencerian Script / Re: Spencerian Signature

Thatís beautiful, but I canít read it. - Isnít the purpose of writing to communicate?? If I canít read it, doesnít that defeat the purpose of writing?? Iím trying to do better at clarifying my writing. (Whatís the first letter?  I can read the surname, but the rest is unrecognizable to me!)

After lettering, do you remove the nib from the holder, or not??

I try to go to IAMPETH every-other year.  (This year, itís in San Antonio!  Thatís kinda sorta in my backyard!  Well, OK!  Thatís almost 500 miles away!  But, in Texas, we consider that to be ďright next doorĒ!). At my last convention, I learned that ďmostĒ calligraphers take the nib out of the holder, after cleaning it.  I DO NOT do that!! My go-to nib is the Brause 66EF.  Itís tiny & delicate. Itís easy to damage it when putting it in or taking it out of the holder.  So, I just leave it in the holder until it wears out.  Sometimes when I pull it out of the holder, itís pretty rusty & ďickyĒ.  If the rust doesnít affect the writing, I guess that I donít really care about that!  What do YOU do??

Re. Pear-Ex Brilliant Gold - I have a ďportfolioĒ that I bring along when meeting with a bride and her mom, grandmother, or significant other.  I have one envelope sample lettered in Pearl-Ex brilliant gold.  For the past 3 years, I havenít had anyone pick ANYTHING other than Pearl-Ex brilliant gold.  OK, I ďget itĒ. - Itís pretty. It REALLY is pretty!  But if your wedding colors are blue & white, donít you WANT blue or white ink??  I told my daughter that I was thinking about taking that sample out of my portfolio. Pearl-Ex is a lot of work. - The mica is hard to work with. - It clogs up the nib.  I have to dip my pen in water, dry it off with a paper towel, load the nib again, & letter again.  (If Iím instead using my favorite Noodlers ink, I just dip the nib in ink & letter away.)  Someone whom I respect said that I should just charge more if someone wants Pearl-Ex.  Well, duh!!  Why the heck didnít I think of THAT??  For a reasonably smart girl, I can be SO stupid!

@K-2:  Iím no expert, but Iíve found that ďshimmeringĒ inks only really shimmer when applied broad edge.  They lose the ďglistenĒ in pointed pen application.

Re. Pearl Ex:  I adore them!  But, especially the brilliant gold!  It is gorgeous when dried!!

Janis

p.s., Joi had an online review of Pearl-Ex & some of them donít work.  Turquoise is one of them, as I recall.  It is just too dense.

@Ken Fraser Iím with you!  I love Spencerian majiscules & Copperplate minuscules!  I know that itís ďagainst the rulesĒ, but rules are meant to be broken! 😃.
