Day 2 - 2022: SCURRY
« on: October 02, 2022, 01:11:31 AM »
I'm going to get this thread started ... It's October 2 for @Lucie Y in any case!

My Sandserian yesterday was just done on a lark.  But I'm learning from it! The large letters are definitely challenging my sense of proportion. The sand is a changing medium based on the amount of moisture. Everything changes as I move to write the letters.  No guidelines.   Photographs foreshorten the letters both vertically and horizontally -- since I don't have a drone, I'm wondering how to distort the writing so the photos look more "correct."  I cannot find a source for the Gillott Willow 303.  Must be a vintage nib.

Continuing to press on in learning some of the ornamental style majuscules as part of my personal Inktober challenge.

+ Sandserian
+ Walnut ink on Claire Fontaine
+ Walnut ink on Strathmore Writing Paper.  Which I now refer to as "Scratchmore."

Here's mine!
So this is how I do it. I practice the elements of the word over and over and when I feel ready, I write it on my notepad, beneath yesterday"s prompt. So I only get one try and have to accept that whatever mistake I make will stay there.
I got a little carried away and made a mess with my Sakura gel pen (on the left)  :(.

Materials:
Straight holder with Hunt22 nib.
The "ink" is some purple watercolor mixed with silver finetec.
Sakura clear stardust gel pen.

@Zivio I love those capital S's, and your Spencerian is very elegant. As for the letters in the sand, I always felt that writing a script HUGE helps you understand the proportions better, but I never took it that far as to need a drone  ;D cool idea to try to distort the letters.

@AnasaziWrites it took me a while to get this (S.Curry), and I had to use Google (shame on me!)
Oh crêpe!

@AnasaziWrites Michael, besides enjoying the lettering and art, it is also your wit and wordplay that kept me coming back (lurking) again and again to the Inktober 2021 entries!  I very much appreciate that this manner of inventiveness may also accompany the visual treats.

Today, it was reminiscent of waking up as a kid to the Sunday comics.  Thanks for the childhood memories ... and motivation to get out of bed. I have four siblings, so getting a first crack at the funnies meant getting up early!  ;D

... So I only get one try and have to accept that whatever mistake I make will stay there. …

Well, @Lucie Y, aren’t you the brave soul?  :o I admire your valiance!  And truly lovely offerings here.
As for my “process,” excepting the Sandserian, it is many attempts, first the new majuscules over and over, then the full word whenever one of the capitals comes out more acceptable, then I “quit when I’m ahead” or get bored and pick the “best of.”

@K-2  Thank you, once again, for bringing the Inktober concept to us! I’m finding your encouragement about joining in was merited. Besides providing personal motivation for working on, or working out, any particular areas for improvement, I’m finding the camaraderie of fellow forum members to be an additional boost. And making doing the hard work you’d mentioned more enjoyable.  :-*

@AnasaziWrites wins the internet!  Brilliant S.Curry!  (btw, I totally remember that Listerine gargoyle ad!)

@Zivio - your sand writing is both beautiful and compelling, and I'm delighted that you're getting a lot out of your participation in this year's Inktober.  Flourish Forum is a particularly wonderful and supportive place to do it, thanks to @Erica McPhee
* alas, I feel that possibly my decision to go with an "all animals" theme had cut down on the cleverness of my responses to the prompts this year.  But I'm in a new managerial/administrative position since January, and it's sucking the life out of me (with an emphasis on sucking).

@Lucie Y - really lovely!  what kind of watercolors do you use?  and if you're a fan of shimmery effects, have you ever tried Kuretake's gansai opal colors?  Your butterfly reminded me of a butterfly project I used them for - a bespoke pop-up butterfly birthday card.  They're spectacular on dark papers, but they also add a holographic gleam to regular watercolors.

I really love how we all have different ideas about this one.
Here's mine.  Yeah, I know I said I was working on mixing/layering inks, but I've got a lot to do today, so it's a monochrome, in Diamine "Triple Chocolate" from Inkvent 2019, with a Herbin "Perle Noire" on the eyes (that's my go-to neutral black for drawing).

Also, I'm trying out some different nibs for copperplate - this one is with a Hunt Imperial.  I've also been playing with the Gillott 303 that Mike very kindly sent me, so perhaps we'll see more of that one soon.

Beautiful little mouse, @K-2 ! You work so quickly!

I use winsor and sennellier watercolors and had not heard of Kuretake.
The reason I practice with Finetec is that the consistency is lovely, it doesn't bleed, and allows for very fine hairlines. Always, the shimmer is encouraging when practicing over and over and over ^^

Ugh, good luck with the managerial side of things!

Woops @Zivio , somehow my laptop didn't show me your post (or my eyes didn't show my brain, everything is possible when I have the flu...)
In terms of process, I've been following Noa Kageyama's blog and newsletter. He is a professional violinist with a PHD in psychology and offers advice on how to optimize musical practice and performance. I probably will start a thread on this some day, because a lot of what he says applies to calligraphy practice too. And since I have an awful habit of mindlessly practicing, which can be counterproductive, I'm trying to get better :D

And you are right, I also want to thank @K-2 for "recruiting" us, it's fun and encouraging to do this together. And thank you @Erica McPhee for making it possible  :-*

Zivio - thanks for the encouragement. Nice work you do on sand and on paper. (“Sandserian,” love it.)

AnasaziWrites - love it, love it.

K-2 - your work is so good. I enjoy seeing your writing and drawings. And your cleverness makes its way into the text of your posts.

LucieY - oh how wonderful! Nice work.

I also have a flourish to share, from one of the exchange letters I finished today.  (gouache: Prussian blue with a little gold and touch of white, Nikki G, oblique holder). You can’t see the slight shimmer effect in the photo.
