Discovering this thread late but adding another vote for the Artograph. It's so well-made. I've had mine for almost 5 years and it is still going strong. I got the 9x12 for $120. Glad it worked out for you, Elizabeth.

If anyone here is in Southern California and would like a taste of what a calligraphy conference is like, come check out Letters California Style which is hosted by Society for Calligraphy in the greater Los Angeles area!

The classes are filled, but these events are open to the public:

Fri/Sat/Sun from 9am-10pm: Save on shipping and shop for calligraphy supplies to your heart's content at the Paper & Ink Arts pop-up store.

Sat 2/13 from 12:15pm-12:45pm: Exclusive book signing by 10 contributing artists from the new Centennial Edition of the Speedball Textbook in front of the Dining Room. Copies will be available for purchase through our on-site vendor.

Sat 2/13 from 5pm-6pm: "Serendipities" demos

Sun 2/14 from 11:30am-1:30pm: Work-in-progress classroom walkthrough/open house. This is your chance to check out what everyone's been working on in each of the 10 classes at the conference!

Sun 2/14 from 6pm-9pm: Dinner/Lecture/Live Auction – you're welcome to pay at the door and join us for the dinner buffet or come afterwards for Washington calligrapher & 2016 faculty member Suzanne Moore's lecture & slideshow around 7:30pm. Suzanne is one of two American artists who worked on the St. John's Bible with Donald Jackson, the Queen's calligrapher.

The conference takes place at the Kellogg West Conference Center on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona: 3801 West Temple Avenue, Pomona, CA

Introductions / Re: Hello from SoCal
« on: February 09, 2016, 07:13:09 PM »
Welcome to Flourish Forum, Edwin!

Like Ev said, in SoCal we have two large calligraphy guilds: Society for Calligraphy (SfC) and San Diego Fellow Calligraphers (SDFC). Both are wonderful groups with warm and friendly people.

If you happen to be near Cal Poly Pomona this weekend, feel free to stop by Letters California Style, which is the mini-conference organized by the Society for Calligraphy. Info in the link above. :)

Maybe I'll just point the phone at the desk and sing a little song ;)

I think David already has that part covered ;) But I want to see/hear your scope, Moya!

(designed by the lovely Mike Kecseg, who was gracious enough to send me a full exemplar)

That's awesome! And so is the logo! Mr. Kecseg is amazing, isn't he.

Pointed Pen Uncial was developed by IAMPETH Master Penman Mike Kecseg. The best exemplar is in the Speedball Textbook :)

Tools & Supplies / Re: What nib do you suggest?
« on: November 21, 2015, 02:35:37 PM »
If the Gillott 404 is too flexible for you, might want to give the Gillott 1068 or Hunt 56 a try. Hiro 41 is also a good beginner's nib - not too sharp and fairly stiff.
