My secret santa blew me away! My apologies for not getting this up sooner (mine showed up at the beginning of the month and was all 4 weeks included).

Thank you to my secret santa. This was so cool and Ive been showing off what I think is a porcupine quill thats been turned into a pen staff.

It came with another ergonmic style pen and a "plain" quill. There was also a tubular metal nib holder with quite a few Sprotts No1 nibs inside. (I dont know anything about these and Im super excited to trt them out!!)

This all came inside a flap box for lack of a better term. That has a try on top and two drawers.

Last and certainly not least- was the card and calligraphy- wow!

Address in broad edge and the specerian message inside (as if I needed any more reason to jump on the spencerian train!!!). It is stunning and Ive had them both hanging in the living room all month!!

Thank you again for all the goodies, time and effort that you put into this exchange. I had a blast opening it and  It will be well loved and cherished!

@Erica McPhee @AnasaziWrites @TeresaS my apologies but my cards to you will be late :(

I asked my wife to mail these a few weeks ago along with a handful of others. Ive been cursing the post and mailmen ans icestorms thinking none of them had been delivered and lost to the mail monsters. She admitted to me she actually found them in the back seat and had forgotten to take them in. I dunno how I missed them either but there ya have it!

I put them in the post Saturday but they will be very belated holiday greetings at this point. Sorry guys!

Hello Flourish Fellows!  :)

My grandma has a pair of these bookends that have a ?blackletter? coin on the sides of them. Her husband had them before they were married. Grandpa passed away in September so we cant ask him. I think its a "L" but maybe a "C" or "D"?  Anywho, I told her I know a great group of people that could probably help us figure it out.

So.. what letter do you think it is? :p
(I only took one picture.. the design is the same on both sides, just flipped.)

It's L

A form of textura, similar  or identical to Linotext (also called wedding text) done by Morris Fuller Benton in 1901.
(this page 183 from "Fractur Mon Amour" by Judith Schalansky}

Thank you! This is the closest printed example Ive seen of it. Definitely an L!

I think you'll find this is an "L".

In my experience the "C" has a curved left hand stroke while a "D" has a strong right hand stroke.

:)

Thank you! I have seen so many variations that I could see all 3 of them to a degree!

With all the hustle and bustle the holidays inevitably become at some point or another- I think we're doing great 😝 Im gonna play some catch up with this post.

Cardinal- Goregous vibrant red with orange hues with it thins out on the pointed pen. Dipped great right out of the bottle. If anyone has wondered.. these 12ml bottles may look small but they hold ALOT of ink.. I clumsly knocked this over on my desk.. bottle is still have full and while I was upset.. I was also pretty impressed at the amount!   ;D

Dusted Truffle- Interesting color. Also dipped well straight from the bottle. Shimmer is eraser friendly.

Appletini- Didnt think I would like this color as much as I did once I started writing with it. Definitely more on the watery side to me. I was able to get a thin hairline and I think the color of the ink, like walnut, makes it look even thinner..(it that makes sense)

Memory Lane - I had a harder time controlling this ink and as youll see in the picture, it blobbed pretty bad in the L in Lane. The shimmer is pretty and sparkly (aka lots of shaking) and I really wanted to like it. Ill probably try thinning it out and see what happens.

Upon a Star - Wow Wow Wow. I liked Solar Storm, Spiced Apple was neat- but this is the first one in my set that gave me full on "Chamelon" vibes. The letters are different colors at different angles and its not subtle at all.

Three Kings- Im with @AnasaziWrites I felt like this was a pretty bland ink (except when wielded by @K-2 ). Kinda like yellow and sepia had a ink baby..

Hand Embossing  - demo by Viktor Kams

Viktor taught his clear and accessible process for making embossings. I followed the steps as he outlined them, including when to add calligraphy, and tried to heed the tips he gave along the way.

Instead of a stylus, I used a bone folder to do the embossing (which he mentioned as a possibility). I am happy to say that attempt was generally successful. A bone folder will work. It might come out nicer with a stylus though. (They can be ordered online and I think some craft stores have them, maybe not expensive.)

I like the process and result enough that I’ll probably buy a stylus eventually. Right now I’m really happy that I can use something I already have. One must be careful, especially depending on the paper, not to rush and not to press any tool too hard, which could tear the paper.

I believe I will be doing this process again. It’s a pleasant and rewarding process. And fun. It’s almost like opening a gift with the anticipation of seeing how the embossing will look face up. This process will make for great cards and other projects.

Paper in example:
For the “A” stencil: heavy watercolor paper (maybe Saunders 140lb/300gsm) (notice the stencil is backwards)

For the embossings:
Canson Colorline I think the 92lb/150g version (white)
Aquabee Heavyweight Drawing 93lb/150gsm (off-white)
Strathmore Drawing 400 series which is 80lb/130gsm (plain “A”, darker off-white)

This looks so elegant and beautiful! Well done  ;D

@K-2 what a compliment! Thank you  ;D I feel the same about your painting and drawings.. Id love to "see" things the way you do. Painting around negative spaces!? Not even in my day dreams  :P

Alpine and Jingle Berry.

Both lovely shades. I love the shimmer of Alpine but the shimmer makes it considerably less "green" in my opinion.

Jingle Berry worked great with the pointed pen. I think Ill be loading it in the fountain pen next!
