Completed/Past Exchanges / Secret Santa 2022
« on: January 01, 2023, 10:57:50 PM »
My secret santa blew me away! My apologies for not getting this up sooner (mine showed up at the beginning of the month and was all 4 weeks included).

Thank you to my secret santa. This was so cool and Ive been showing off what I think is a porcupine quill thats been turned into a pen staff.

It came with another ergonmic style pen and a "plain" quill. There was also a tubular metal nib holder with quite a few Sprotts No1 nibs inside. (I dont know anything about these and Im super excited to trt them out!!)

This all came inside a flap box for lack of a better term. That has a try on top and two drawers.

Last and certainly not least- was the card and calligraphy- wow!

Address in broad edge and the specerian message inside (as if I needed any more reason to jump on the spencerian train!!!). It is stunning and Ive had them both hanging in the living room all month!!

Thank you again for all the goodies, time and effort that you put into this exchange. I had a blast opening it and  It will be well loved and cherished!

Open Flourish | General Discussion / What letter is this?
« on: December 16, 2022, 11:44:11 PM »
Hello Flourish Fellows!  :)

My grandma has a pair of these bookends that have a ?blackletter? coin on the sides of them. Her husband had them before they were married. Grandpa passed away in September so we cant ask him. I think its a "L" but maybe a "C" or "D"?  Anywho, I told her I know a great group of people that could probably help us figure it out.

So.. what letter do you think it is? :p
(I only took one picture.. the design is the same on both sides, just flipped.)

Completed/Past Exchanges / Halloween/Day of the Dead 2022 Exchange

Man oh man, this is always a fun exchange! Im already thinking about next years!  Ive already messaged you all but who doesn't love a little extra glory!  ;D

@KarenW15 Your drawings are fantastic and compliment your neat and clean calligraphy! Zero has a spot on my wall all year long!

@passionforwriting Your note made my day! I have been envious of your hand since our first exchange, and I will definitely be borrowing how you made the candies on your card. Such a fun idea!

@Starlee I signed up for the gentle penman class with Michael Sull to learn spencerian after getting your envelope. I will likely never attain the light touch for Spencerian that you have, but you displayed its elegance so nicely that I had to try!

@TeresaS Yours was the first to arrive and Ive gotten to enjou it all month (and will continue to!). These pumpkins have definitely helped crack a smile on more than one occasion. The beautiful copperplate quote on the back complimemts it perfectly. The only downside is, Im greedy and cant have the pumpkins AND the calligraphy displayed at the same time  ;)

Life has been crazy, and busy and sometimes rough. I just wanted you all to know how much I appreciate the time and effort you pour into your craft to make beautiful, spooky, and kooky things to send out to others :p

Open Flourish | General Discussion / Writing on gold leaf
« on: February 15, 2022, 01:57:35 PM »
Hello all!

Hoping to pick the great collective minds on a project Im being recruited for..

The artist has a vision for bold black lettering on top of wood birch panels that have been gold leaf. Immeditely I was hesitatant since I know nothing about gold leaf and can imagine its fairly difficult. Looking back in the posts I found some information from @Ken Fraser but alas the subject wasnt specific to writing on gold leaf, but rather writing small which happen to be on gold leaf.

From the little bits of research Ive done, it seems Ill need to know what/if she treated her gold leaf with? Does anyone have any suggestions on ink? Should I do anything special to my ink to make sure it adherese well to the gold leaf?

The x height Im currently working with is 5mm. We are leaning towards a broad edge script (likely foundational/roman so it can easily be read when all the panels and portaits are done). At this x height would a pointed pen make more sense on the gold leaf than a broad edge?

She isnt planning on hanging the pieces for a show until October so I have plenty of time to do some research. Appreciate any suggestions or pearls of wisdom. This is the trickest thing I have attempted in lettering and Id welcome any helpful hints you talented individiuals have discovered ;D

Thank you!
-Aries

Ps..
If your interested here are the portaits

And the panels to be callgraphied. Photos were taken before panels were gold leafed

Introductions / Hi from Oregon

Hello everyone!

My name is Aries :) I am very excited to be apart of this community (and the calligraphy community in general!). Calligraphy is such a calming, relaxing, time consuming, and sometimes exhausting hobby that has turned into a full blown passion for me as it has for so many others!

I'm a big fan of Harry Potter. I love the quills and the idea of writing with quills and ink. So I bought a fancy feather for my home office March 2020. After playing around with it and the ink it came with, I quickly invested in speedball set by June. I found and fell in love with point pen scripts (heeeello Copperplate! ;D) and it became my saving grace in quarantine. I love love love everything about it. The sound of the nib on paper, the smell of sumi ink, the never ending chase of perfection! All of these things have led me here in hopes of continuing to develop my knowledge and hand, as well as making friends with such an amazing group of people.

When I'm not writing and rewriting my letters, I spend a lot of time with my son and Wife out side enjoying everything the PNW has to offer. I look forward to getting to know all of you and making some new snail mail/pen pal buddies!

 ;D Aries
