This is the ubiquitous tripod (triangular) pen hold. It comprises the thumb and first two fingers, with the pen shaft resting on the large knuckle of the first finger. This pen hold is recommended almost everywhere in the pen world. As a teenager, I had a peculiar fist-like pen hold which was far from ideal. I was interested in handwriting and when I first read about the triangular pen hold I made a concerted effort to change. I remember that it took a long time but having eventually made the change and having become aware of its advantages in flexibility and comfort, I used it thereafter with all types of penholder and in all styles of writing. This was approximately 70 years ago and this has been my natural pen hold ever since.
