Introductions / Hello from Hong Kong
« on: August 02, 2020, 11:52:42 PM »
Hello everyone,

Nice to meet you all, and thank you for accepting me into the Flourish Forum.

I am very much a newb to the art of writing and calligraphy. My own journey started back at school in the UK when they graduated us from pencil and ballpoint to fountain pens. I must have been 10 or 12, and I remember seeing a wonderful script in some textbooks, but alas I was too lazy to focus and improve what we called “joined-up writing”.

Fast forward to now - just a few years later - I picked up the pen again and discovered that script is called American Cursive. I took a deep dive down the fountain pen rabbit hole and tried Mills, Palmer and Mary Champion; and recently found the perfect scripts in a form of the Zanerian and a Simplified Spencerian hand.

(Both are mentioned in the Zanerian Journal and highlighted in David DiGiovanni’s blog)

Another late night deep dive and I stumbled across a FF post by @Rednaxela and his (very free) Worksheets from The New Spencerian Compendium. I just thought it really really cool how everyone is so warm and so kind to each other. I was also quite touched at the stories I read and I really love how generous everyone is with their knowledge (so rare to find this on the interwebs, especially during this day and age!)

So over the weekend, I popped out and grabbed a couple of Nikko G & Blue Pumpkin nibs, some Walnut Ink, a shiny new handmade oblique; and I will be heading out again today to pick up a Michael Sull penholder (thank you VERY much and a massive shout out to the beginner threads!)

In short, I’m just an overexcited newbie trying to copy a group of pros so that my own handwriting doesn’t make me look like a baboon. I also hope I will continue to have a bucketload of fun and maybe one day, I’ll be satisfied with my skill at cursive and take on Spencerian or Copperplate.

I hope you guys will not mind my future questions and I really look forward to learning from you all.

Thank you again, and I hope you guys have a good evening / great day. Take care and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Les
