Tools & Supplies / Re: Hairlines: Rhodia vs. Conqueror

Thanks, Estefa.  I appreciate the recommendations.

I haven't tried the 511, but I did try some crowquills.  They didn't flex enough for ornamental penmanship, but the practice did improve my hairlines with other nibs.  I'll check out the 511.

Welcome.  Any plans to combine pottery and calligraphy?  I recently met an artist who did something like that.

Ah, I see that I was a little unclear.  I do rule a baseline on my writing paper, usually.  I don't use guide sheets for slant lines directly under my writing.  I would love to be able to write precisely without any guides.  I think that's probably some years (decades?) away, though.

Thanks for the blotter suggestions.  I want to try them out and experiment a bit.

That's an excellent suggestion, Andy.  Thank you.  I think that could help a lot.

I've been using several sheets of HP premium choice laser paper (it's 32-lb. stuff) under my writing paper.  I don't use guide sheets while I'm writing,

DIGRESSION ALERT!

and here's why: around the time I stopped using the Spencerian theory book and copybooks, I read Madarasz' advice regarding engrosser's script—something like, 'Orient your paper so that the slant is vertical to eye and desk.'  I also read Zaner's advice along the lines of, 'Align your paper so that the forearm of your writing hand swings along the connective slant,'  I decided to try combining those pieces of advice, and I'm still doing it, although I focus more on Madarasz' direction.

END OF DIGRESSION ALERT.  THE REST OF THIS POST IS DIGRESSION-FREE!

Sybille, that's very helpful.  I appreciate your taking the time to test them.

I'm working on lightening my hand, but my hairlines are still much thicker than the ones the old masters could make.  So, I want to be sure I'm using the best materials.

Thank you very much!

Tools & Supplies / Hairlines: Rhodia vs. Conqueror
« on: September 05, 2015, 06:52:11 AM »
I would like to find the paper that gives the finest hairlines with a fine nib and a gall ink, and I've got a passel of questions.  Right now, I'm using Rhodia with a Gillott 303 and iron gall.  How does Conqueror compare?  I've read positive things about Conqueror high white wove.  Does the dye affect the texture, or are the other colors the same?  How about CX22?  Is there another paper that would beat these?

Thanks for any help along these lines (sorry).

Welcome.  With two toddlers, it must be very hard to find time to practice calligraphy.  Which style(s) would you like to learn?
