Aren't batards a small, loaf similar to a baguette? Why would they need a hat?

Oh, maybe you're not talking about them. ::)

Great question, I love reading the replies!

As for me, I'm working on consistency in spacing, size and slant of my copperplate letters.

And I agree, that p is so tricky for me.  My head knows what I need to do, but for some reason, my hand, as if a knee jerk reaction, always wants to loop it back in towards the stem!

No no, you were right first time.  Crikey, what a palaver.  I'm coming to the conclusion that making French bread is a pain.

Whilst the smoke clears in the kitchen I'm also messing around with some French gothic cursive type capital letters.

I had to millet over that for awhile, but it was much a-dough about muffin.

When I'm in France, there's nothing easier. Walk to Boulangerie, purchase loaf of your choice. Walk home. Done.

Outside of France is another matter. I've had good, authentic baguettes in Senegal in West Africa, and Raleigh in North Carolina. (from a gent transplanted from Francophone Africa, selling at the Farmer's Market)

Good luck. It is an art. Sometimes a dark art if you leave them in too long. Just remember, the smoke alarm is not a timer.

We knead to stop this.

Having to go back and get used to writing with a fountain pen again. After all of my writing recently with dip nibs, the fountain pen is too smooth with not enough feedback so my writing has deteriorated terribly.

Consistency, spacing, letterforms: for both dip and fountain pen.

Forgive me for shouting, but this one has been very important for me, lately:

Making my minuscules a bit larger.  I don't yet have the skill to shade accurately when they're small.
