What nib do you suggest?
« on: November 21, 2015, 11:24:09 AM »
I have been using a Nikko G nib recently. I only had one and today it gave out on me. I have a Gillott 404 that I've switched to which is a bit too flexible for me. I also have a Brause 66ef. It's nice but I don't like to use it for letter writing. Back to the Nikko G. For the most part I like its qualities but would like something just a bit smoother. What would you suggest?

If the Gillott 404 is too flexible for you, might want to give the Gillott 1068 or Hunt 56 a try. Hiro 41 is also a good beginner's nib - not too sharp and fairly stiff.

Thanks. I'll have to try some of those out in my next order. I have a Hunt 512 apparently that I'd been using for a while. (I had no idea what it was at the time. I bought whatever I could find locally until I ordered the other ones I have now.) I actually liked that one quite a bit.

The Tachikawa 'G' is one of my favorites because it's smooth yet fine.

It sounds like you'd probably like the old Mitchell G, which I suppose is the common ancestor of all the modern G nibs.  They're not that hard to find ... mind you there are many vintage nibs with a similar feel.

An Esterbrook Falcon 048 will give you almost as much flex as a G nib, but is far smoother and lasts much longer.  It is my favorite general writing nib.  The old writing nibs, like the falcon, are pretty large, so while they can be used in an oblique holder they work better in a straight holder.  I have found them in quantity on eBay for excellent prices.
