Below a person's Profile name and number of posts (on the left hand side)  is an [applaud]  thing.  If you feel that the post has helped you or it's a good contribution, you can applaud it and it adds to the person's Karma. 

So a person with a lot of Karma, has been giving a lot of help and advice that has been appreciated by all. :)
